Messi - officially on the market

Even so it’s a ridiculous argument. Why on earth should he play for free? He is still for me the greatest player there is. He will be paid the going rate. It’s rare in football but he is a player who is bigger than clubs. If he goes to PSG his brand and everything about him will bring PSG insane amounts of revenue.

I know he's been a free agent for a while but Barca have just put out a statement that he won't be staying. So who will he be joining? Man City? PSG? Or someone else?

Probably someone in Argentina.

But that's the point, he could play for free and would make no difference in his life but would improve the fortunes of the club he loves.

Exactly. Considering most big clubs are either owned by billionaires or brands worth billions no player should ever play for free anyway. Their financial issues certainly arent his fault so why should he suffer for it

Look into it, rules are different to the prem. As it stands they cant register him regardless of the finances. Hopeful it changes but as it stands they cant do anything
Weegord has it bang on.
Pay him £10 a week then let him play and show his love of the club. Put something back into it.
He's leaving for one reason only. Money.

Are you on a wind up here or just ignored every other post on the thread?

Either way im not explaining it again

The finance problems relate to Barca.

They can't even sign players on a free because of their financial problems.

Even if Messi said he'll play for toffee, they can't sign him. La Liga won't allow it until Barcelona reduce their hefty wage bill.

Why do you think the likes of Trincao has gone to Wolves and Firpo has gone to Leeds?

Eh? They need to reduce their wage bill but still can't play him for nothing? 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁

Come on. Is that the best you can come up with?

I don't think we can criticise someone for wanting the best possible deal in exchange for their labour, it's the system (unfortunately) and we need to work within it.

I'm also not convinced the comparisons with "ordinary" people stack up - he's an elite professional footballer and probably judges his salary in line with other elite professional footballers. I think we're all probably guilty of that to some extent, everyone (for better or worse) knows their value in the labour market.

Context.
"According to Goal, Messi's last contract earned him a net salary of around 515,000 euros ($610,000) a week meaning his new contract would see him take home 257,000 euros ($305,000) a week."

Messi has a Net worth of around $600million.

But he's leaving for more money.

It's crazy how many posters are commenting on this situation and yet have no idea what is going on.
Combination of stubbornness and arrogance that comes with internet discourse. Even when something is explained to people, if it goes against their own prejudices, or contradicts some narrative they've created, they simply will not accept it and dig their heels in hoping their reply is the last.

Barça president Laporta: “We had an agreement with Messi to sign a five-years contract but paying him two years salary. Leo agreed the contract, it was ACCEPTED. We were convinced it was a good agreement for Financial Fair Play but... it wasn’t allowed by La Liga”.

They will do something so he stays, this structured "deal" was La Liga's idea and they pulled the plug on it, by the sounds of things.

La Liga do want Barca to sort their finances out, but the La Liga brand would take a hammering if Messi goes anywhere else, so they want to sort it out, if they can, this is just Barca/ Messi tactics.

They will probably offset his wage by 10 years or something.

I'd like him to go to Man U, but I can't see him playing against Pep, for City's rivals.

City will definitely be checking their finances mind, they could just forget about Kane, and allocate half his fee to Messi and it's job done. After 3-4 years Kane won't be worth much, so they won't get a better return than if they got Messi and Messi will last 5 years longer than Kane anyway.

Bet Pep has got 150 missed calls from Kane now, running out of excuses why he won't answer the phone, whilst sat next to the accountant seeing how they can make it work.

City won't just go hell for leather though, Grealish was their highest ever transfer fee, can't see them pumping 160m into Kane, when he's likely on similar wages to Messi, but Messi's free.

It would be funny though, if Barca stole Aguero, only for that to open the door for City to steal Messi :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

In talks with PSG apparently and Neymar has offered him his number ten shirt too.

Wonder what this does to them chasing Pogba and possibly selling Mbappe to Real if it comes off?
