Medal Count - North East rock bottom

This is without the rowing and cycling haul we normally have plus a lack of traditional gold in athletics.

incredible really
Atlanta 96 we won 1 gold medal and 15 medals overall, has any other nation shown the improvement we have since then (excluding the home country as they always get a bounce from hosting)?

I think it's down to lack of facilities in this region. Like Manchester have the velodrome etc sporting hubs are built. Not sure how a youngster can take up some of these Olympic sports in this region
Spot on. Lack of facilities = lack of investment in the area.

Nowadays many of of Olympians are paid a full time salary, so they move to where the facilities are very good/excellent and billions have be invested in London, Birmingham, Manchester, certainly not in the North East.

Can anyone think of a National Centre based in the North East?

Another factor in the recent pasts has been private schools , a signifacnt number of Olympians have attended a private school. There are not hundreds of private schools in the NE.

We have a sports village and a velodrome in Mbro. But maybe it would take several years to work through.
