Medal Count - North East rock bottom

You can pretty much take the top three out of the equation. The north west is ridiculously sporty and the south east and London simply have loads of people so more chance. I agree though being bottom isn’t good. Is it a small population thing? Under investment? Or maybe lack of diversity? There are probably less opportunities for sportsmen that aren’t footballers in the north east

I think it's down to lack of facilities in this region. Like Manchester have the velodrome etc sporting hubs are built. Not sure how a youngster can take up some of these Olympic sports in this region

When you think of the size of our population it's incredible to get twenty golds (more to come I hope!!). I remember decades gone by when we were bowled over if we won four or five.

Incredible achievement which we should all savour.

Can we just celebrate how well Team GB have done first and then hold the inquest later. A week ago some people were doubting we'd match our medal from Beijing and we could up equalling Rio

TEAM GB TEAM GB TEAM GB

We were always good at athletics whereas all the funding (probably rightly so) goes to what would be perceived as toffs sports Where’s Clairville Stadium these days? Do they still have inter school athletics completions these days?

It's a bit like tennis isn't it? Always perceived as a middle class sport.

Clairville Stadium is now a housing estate - it has been replaced with a purpose built Middlesbrough Sports Village located just off Marton Road near Stewart Park - looks a very impressive set up

Nice to know. We could do with some academies of excellence being set up in the North East not everything hundreds of miles away.

This is without the rowing and cycling haul we normally have plus a lack of traditional gold in athletics.
