Agree, RVDB is the one I'd be looking to bring into that back four I think.I thought we were stacked pre-season but neither Fry nor Lenihan have exactly looked undroppable so far.
Ashley Fletcher would turn into prime Van Basten whenever he had one of his “niggles”.This post is the ultimate player gets better due to absence thread I've seen.
Carayol was the prior title holder.
hes really needed s hes better thanANYTHING we currently haveClarke played one good game under Wilder that I remember, I think it was against Swansea. He linked up really well down the left hand side. But then he went downhill fast, probably due to the injury. Good to see him back in training and if he's usually the player from the first game, great. Don't know if he'll be troubling the first team any time soon though.
Lenihan is streets ahead of him. Fry is also better. As is McNair. If we can get Clarke back to 100% he’ll be the best CB we have at the club in my opinion. Us signing him was bizarre the way the then coach wanted him to play. If he’s playing in a back 4, which he will under Carrick, then he will shine. Really hoping we can get him back to full fitness.
Great news and let's hope he gets back playing ASAP.
However, have I not read on here a few times that he has been back 'training' for months but as soon as he does anything resembling football, his back can't cope?
Feels like the perfect game to get him involved, hopefully a couple of behind closed doors/ under 21 games before then to build match sharpnessI wonder just how far away he actually is from getting on the pitch. Could the Bradford game be too soon? Perfect opportunity if not.
Righto.Lenihan is streets ahead of him. Fry is also better. As is McNair.
Funny how everyone at the time we signed him was saying he's perfect for what we needed at the time (a ridiculous overlapping centre back), obviously only until they saw him play.
Happy for him that he's on the way to recovery, but if Clarke is how we're going to turn round our leaky defence then we're really in trouble.
Based on what? A handful of games when he was carrying what turned out to be a very serious injury. His game against Swansea was the only one where he wasn't injured, and I remember everyone saying after that game that he was what we needed. He seemed solid defensively and linked up really well with Giles on the left.Lenihan is streets ahead of him. Fry is also better. As is McNair.

Firstly, I'm no medical professional, neither do I have access to Matt Clarke's medical records.Everyone has different powers of recovery but at 26 you'd think he'd be ok to get up to speed within weeks rather than months. Nonetheless it adds competition and will give MC a big boost to his overall long term plans.
agreed, He has certainly been on the grass for a week, and now we have a 2 week break. So when we reconvene after international break he should have 3 weeks work under his belt. I'd expect at this point he will be looking for a 60 minute run out with the U21s. From there it will be monitor how his body reacts. If all good he could possibly be bench ready within another week. So about 5 weeks from now. 5 weeks of full training, baring any setbacks and he could then be approaching available for selection, but still a bit behind on his match sharpness.Firstly, I'm no medical professional, neither do I have access to Matt Clarke's medical records.
But I would be surprised if he can start for the first xi in less than a month. Caution will be taken given his one step forward, two steps back recovery thus far for one. He'd probably take a bare minimum of 3 weeks to get his full fitness back bearing in mind the length of a normal pre-season, the fact he's had a huge layoff and he won't be pushed too fast.
At the end of this period he would be introduced into the reserves, then make the bench for the first team, possibly coming on for the last 10 or 15 minutes if the game allows it. Followed by a starting appearance in which he'd be subbed around the hour mark.
IF all goes well with him it wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest this would probably take around 5 weeks, with a week or two longer to get his full match sharpness back.
In a glass half full way of looking at it, a month and a half to him possibly performing out of his boots is nothing when compared to how long he's been sidelined. And at least the international break eats up some of that time!
