Martin Payero Appreciation

I feel like we all wanted him to do so well due to our love of South American footballers but injuries and home sickness have plagued him.

There's a player in there, for three games he looked absolutely Incredible, scored a great goal and then bad luck struck with the first of multiple Injuries.
What might have been if Wilder didn't cause the upturn in form and the midfield three became relatively undroppable for a period?
Would he have kicked on if he'd have got that game against Sheffield United instead of it being postponed?

Can never fault his passion, his reaction when we beat United was amazing, just like the rest of the squad, you could tell he was all in! It's just such a shame.

I really hope he goes back to Argentina and bosses it for Boca Juniors a huge club.
I just wish it wasn't gonna have an option to buy because I genuinely feel like he's gonna become a very, very good player.
Good passing, good crosser of the ball, didn't shirk a tackle and a good shot on him.
In a league with less pace and less psyicallity he'll shine.

Our luck with Argentines is awful isn't it?

Our luck with Brazilians though is much better...over to you Rodrigo Muniz...you're clearly on your way 😂

All the best to Martin Payero!

That is some stretch. He scored a good goal and had one or two glimpses of quality.

I would have liked him to stay and see if he could have developed but he's had plenty of time to impress Wilder and if he is prepared to offload him I'm confident that is the right decision.

It was a pointless signing in hindsight. As has been discussed at length on here our recruitment strategy didn't match the manager. We either needed to back Warnock with his "type" of players (largely experienced in the English leagues, but not much, if any, resale value) or bring in a manager who aligned with the recruitment strategy.

To quote Ron Swanson, don't half **** two things, whole **** one thing.

Wilder is probably somewhere in between. He at least has one eye on the long term, but he's clearly very focused on competing for promotion immediately. If he's not sure about a player he won't play them. Payero was never likely to be given much of a chance and when it looked like he was about to under Wilder, he got injured.

Most if not all of our loan signings were duds last year. All the three forwards, Payero and let’s not even mention Lea silki. A lot of money wasted. Let’s hope this season is a vast improvement. Think Giles will be good and hopefully Stefan too. As ever, the forwards are the hard part.

It's funny how one person's "absolutely incredible" is another pesons "ok". I'd say he showed some promise in a few games, with some clear deficiencies.

He has never looked “absolutely incredible” he had one game against Cardiff where he looked like he might have potential.

If his name had been Martin Paylor and he came from Andover and not Argentina then we would all just have shrugged.

He never looked any good, he didnt settle and it didnt work out. Move on.

I will forever love Martin its tragic we have given up on him after only a season. I rewatched back the 5 games he started in October last night he got better and better with every game. Remeber singing Si senor he is best in the world Martin payero pass the ball to Martin he will score. He then got injured and never started a game for us again 😞

Wasn't up to speed yes he never got a good run of games and injuries spoilt his time but we weren't and aren't in a position to give someone a run of 10-15-20 games if they aren't up to it, we need to be buying finished articles ready to hit the ground running

Remember him hitting the bar from outside the box in one of his very first games, might have been against Blackpool at home? Would have been absolute limbs if it had went in.

Scored a good goal against Cardiff and set Coburn up for his goal against Peterborough. Apart from that, nothing else sticks out.

Oh, his stupid tackle that ended his season vs QPR, putting us down to 10 men when we were on top

That QPR tackle could have been Martin's sliding doors moment. Unnecessary challenge, as I think the ball/player were going nowhere and looked a bit innocuous at the time. If not injured, he may have featured after that, given our cup run and number of games. A chance to impress Wilder which he obviously wasn't able to do in training.

If you believe that we need to buy finished articles only then you're effectively ruling out us signing any players from abroad or outside of the championship.

That's unrealistic particularly when we're looking to get value for money. Any signing is a risk even those that have done it at other clubs in the championship as it's a different environment and potentially a different style of play or tactics and that can impact performance (look at some of the supposed goal machines Boro have helped turn into stuttering plodders over the years with our tactics/set up).

Basically what I'm saying is there's no such thing as a sure fire transfer success. We can do due diligence and try to reduce the risk of the signings failing but risk is an inherent part of any transfer. I agree there's probably more risk when signing players from overseas as it's a new culture, country, often language as well as the new team mates, league and style of play stuff that a British signing would need to get to grips with as well. However Boro as a club cannot afford to close ourselves off to the possibility of unearthing a foreign gem, it's potentially our lifeline for making money and growing as a club.

We need to continue taking these risks and also more importantly giving them the time to pay off (or not) and not just washing our hands at the first signs of it not working out. (I'm not saying this is happening with Payero as I don't know, he may genuinely have not settled and asked for a move). It's going to be difficult dipping into the foreign markets but we need to persevere and continue to work at it. For me getting Kieran Scott in was part of a long term strategy of us going down that route and I'm fully supportive of it.

I said at the time wilder came in and it wasn't popular on here that he would be first out of the team , as wilder wants workrate over skill. Months later wilder came out with infamous mantra of attitude over ability, which to me still sounds like a faux pas.

Who could blame the poor lad for wanting to get away from boro after two Jurassic managers

Agreed, but we cant afford to play him for a season if he is no good. We cant afford to keep playing footballers who are no good. Their transfer fee doesn't matter because the same happened to that Olusanya he was obviously not good enough for the club. We aren't in a position to play him non stop regardless purely because he has potential, that is what u23 and loan moves are for. If they're a young, unproven then yeah give them a run, 5-10 at a push but if they're obviously not upto it they need a year on loan, or time in the u23, but we aren't just going to keep playing footballers who show no promise whatsoever like Payero did.

If you think he was 'absolutely incredible' then you are very easily pleased. Against Reading (in late September admittedly) he looked like a little boy lost (although in a very poor team performance). We all wanted him to do well but 'glamorous' South American signings get a much lower bar when judging their performance. Imagine if he'd put in the same performances as Howson last season? Some of our fans would be talking as if he were the new Juninho.

There's some talent there but he was judged on his performances and (lack of) fitness and found wanting by 2 different managers. He's not a kid and we needed him to be available and to produce last season. He's a senior player so we couldn't afford another year of him 'adapting' to English football.

My biggest concern is not that we've let a gem slip through our fingers, but the amount of money we've wasted on it and hoping that we've learned some lessons from it with regards to recruitment.

Pretty much my feelings entirely, the biggest disappointment is the funds wasted, that could have been used elsewhere, to better effect.
