Martin Braithwaite on his Boro departure

I don't think I've ever known an ex-player have as much to say as he has since leaving.

Isn’t he just answering a question?

That's fair enough but his comments about people trying to 'create a picture' suggests he still feels he conducted himself well during his time here.

Although I do think to an extent we misused him on the pitch, ultimately he was a mercenary who was never fully committed to the club.

I'd have respected him more if he'd have just said he didn't fit in and left it there.

Good riddance to the t@sser . Who does he think he is ?

I don't have an issue with him. He played when picked, trained professionally, and has never been negative about the club. It seems his failing is his wages, and the fact that he wanted to leave so soon (which appeared to be because his partner couldn't settle in the UK). I always thought that he did it the correct way. Braithwaite had had an offer to speak to another club, kept his boss in the loop, it fell through without talks, and the boss spoke about it in the next press conference.

I've never quite understood the vitriol towards him either. Never thought he was a poor player (still don't) and Barcelona (a team not known for deliberately fielding terrible players) would seem to agree.

He was signed by one manager to fulfil a particular role and the next manager either didn't think he could or (more likely) no longer required that role in his team. I think this happens regularly with other teams, maybe we're slightly insulated from it as we don't tend to change managers with such regularity?

Fair enough you saying you don’t think he was a poor player (I do) but the only reason Barca signed him was Cos they had an injury crisis and they could exploit a rule in la liga where they could sign a player from a la liga team due to their injury crisis outside of the transfer window and Leganes couldn’t do anything about it. Would be very surprised if they don’t try and flog him as soon as this season is over as he isn’t anywhere remotely good enough to be playing football for that great club.

I am still in shock Barca paid 18m Euros for him and at 28 years old. Less than 1 in 4 a game goal scorer across his career, usually on the subs bench for Denmark. At least we got some extra cash when he went to Barca. Monk probably cost us £6m on an overinflated fee and having to pay some of his wages when out on loan.

People took a dislike to him because after 4 months he started to say he wanted to move and in some games he was not giving 100%, you could tell by the way our own players shouted at him at times. Possibly we also expected more for £9m and high wages. He showed in bursts he was a decent player say in August 2018, but other times I felt his heart was not there. To me he seemed intelligent enough to know how a move to England would affect his family situation if his family situation was causing his drop in form and motivation. He also would have known about the different styles of football in different countries.

I wish him luck at Barca, it is also up to MFC to research him more before signing and I get the impression they could have done more.

Fair point, restricts their options a little but still chose him over quite a few others. I'll admit I was pretty surprised they signed him as well but they obviously see something there.

There's an interesting line in the article about his movement/awareness (two traits I thought he displayed well in his time at Boro) - essentially opening up space for Messi & Co to exploit. Could be that we didn't really have the quality around him at Boro to make best use of that asset.

Yeah that’s the only positive out of the deal that the boro got something back on him.

I’m sick of seeing this ex-player appearing in the Gazette. He is always trying to justify his actions and to be quite honest I would rather just forget all about him.

If he had been a good servant to Boro then fair enough, but he wasn’t, I know the Gazette are desperate for copy in these quiet times but I would rather they did a feature on an ex Boro player who actually was liked and did something for us, there are plenty of them about.
