Lukas Engel and the fear of failure

During his BBC Tees interview, he gave a really honest insight into his struggles earlier in the season, describing his fear of failing at the club. I found it incredibly refreshing to hear a footballer speak so honestly about something I’m sure all of us have felt at some point in our lives. No excuses, no bluster, just honesty.

Massive credit to someone who seems like a top bloke 👍🏻

I want him to succeed at Boro, he seems like a good honest guy who wants to do his best every time he is on the pitch.

He has had a tough start and I think that is down to many factors not just him but the players in front of him on the LW rarely offer him the save level of protection a Jones or Forss does on the other wing.
Despite that he seems to be getting better and better and is proving to be a good bit of business.

Interesting to hear. You hardly ever hear a player say things like this. They are usually bullish and full of bravado.

So very refreshing to hear one being honest. He still gets the odd pelters on here. I think he's come on leaps and bounds. Massively improved over the last 2-3 months.

Certainly well worth the money. Once again credit to the summer recruitment.

If you asked anyone at half time at Hillsborough " Do you want to see Engel in a Boro shirt again?"
We all know what the answer would have been.
But he made good use of Bangura's injury soon after that game to fight his way into our hearts. Already a potential Boro Legend

He's often left to defend on his own at left back so there are mitigating circumstances and he's stepped up to a higher standard of football to boot.
Regardless of any opinion on his ability, you have to hand it to him to have overcome that 1st half at Hillsborough which could have killed his Championship career stone dead. Credit too to Carrick for not not binning him off and showing the faith and belief which seems to be a major factor in his ability to get players performing for him and buying into the team ethos. He doesn't come across as a full on motivator, but whatever he's doing and saying is working brilliantly.

Few great points here, especially those about Carrick. It must be so much easier to overcome a fear of failure when you have a manager who supports and encourages you to keep doing your thing.

Cheers. Sorry (Windynook) if that came across like I was being critical of your post, I wasn't. Just emphasising that the silent majority often have a different opinion from those that shout the loudest.

To be fair if it hadn’t been for injuries he may never have got another chance after Sheff Wed- he only came back in because Bangura, O’Brien and RVDB were unavailable. We need to bare that in mind when praising carrick for bringing him back in from the cold
