Lukas Engel and the fear of failure

I think most of the errors he makes are due to the intensity of the English game; the back passes he's given away may be the result of the intensity of pressing in England.

It used to be that players were given a year to adjust to the pace of the English game, regardless of their age. Now, performance in a player's first 6 games are held against them months later.
I get what you’re saying - maybe he could improve the defensive side of his game but he doesn’t look like an out an out left back to me. I think he’d but a good left wing back at this level right now for sure but defensively as an out a left back he just lacks that wee bit defensively for me. There’s a lot to like about the way he plays for sure, and he’s come on in leaps and bounds from his first few games - I’d say right now he’s a bit of an enigma, where you’re never quite sure what to expect from him.

Modern full backs are attack focussed.

Teams rarely just have a flat 4 moving up and back together. Full backs are attacking outlets and that style of play comes wit. Risk.

The problem with Engel is he drops so many basic errors defensively - i don’t know if he can improve on that. He’s not a kid, he’s 24. I like his attitude and he definitely offers something as an attacking threat. I think his best position would be in as left wingback but he ideally wouldn’t be your first choice left back - sorry 🤷🏼‍♂️
Of course he can improve, he's never played at this level before, he'll be learning all the time, his age is meaningless in that context

During his BBC Tees interview, he gave a really honest insight into his struggles earlier in the season, describing his fear of failing at the club. I found it incredibly refreshing to hear a footballer speak so honestly about something I’m sure all of us have felt at some point in our lives. No excuses, no bluster, just honesty.

Massive credit to someone who seems like a top bloke 👍🏻
European culture though too. Which is : why lie or avoid answering questions about your mental state because we are all ultimately the same, struggling with new challenges in our lives and they don’t have any shame about that whereas us British still see it largely as a weakness
He sees it as a superpower

Probably some truth in that footy legs. The British stiff upper lip should be binned. It does nobody any good.

Yeah. It’s kind common sense and something we are (as a Society in the uk) less in touch with whereas Engel comes from a society with a completely different mindset.
And mindset or focus is absolutely the difference between success or lack of it - in every life situation.
Focus on what you don’t want (moan, complain or ruminate) and you attract more of it
Turn your focus to how you’d like to be and things will gradually change.
(I think this is a massive thing that most people are completely unaware of)

Chelsea will tear him too bits if he starts that game & it will be the end of him with only Carrick to blame.

The Danes tend to be very blunt and honest, even for Europeans.

Brits often can find this a bit insensitive and rude, but its a cultural difference. They will say Brits are tow faced because we will say things behind people's back and not to their face. Maybe this is where Yorkshire folk got their bluntness from, as many placenames have Danish type names say ending by.

What an absolute load of old b***ks! 😉☺️

This is a reason fans should really stop and think before criticising. We are all human and players will have doubts like we all do.
Should be the case for any footballer. Can't think of any other job where you are in the public eye for two hours every week and everything you do in that time is held up to the highest level of possible scrutiny.

Engel's came up roses, really. Took a while to settle and unfortunately faced horrendous criticism for having to adjust to a very different way of life. Now we're seeing exactly why the club hierarchy invested in him, and I for one couldn't be happier.
