Lukas Engel and the fear of failure

To be fair if it hadn’t been for injuries he may never have got another chance after Sheff Wed- he only came back in because Bangura, O’Brien and RVDB were unavailable. We need to bare that in mind when praising carrick for bringing him back in from the cold

That doesn't mean he wouldn't have given him another chance; it just explains why he did at that particular point.

This is a reason fans should really stop and think before criticising. We are all human and players will have doubts like we all do.
I used to tell kids when I trained them to play Rugby. 'If a player makes a mistake on the pitch, HE knows he is the worst player on that pitch at that moment in time. HE does not need reminding.
I hate all these experts slagging players off during the game, no player needs it or deserves it.

If you asked anyone at half time at Hillsborough " Do you want to see Engel in a Boro shirt again?"
We all know what the answer would have been.
But he made good use of Bangura's injury soon after that game to fight his way into our hearts. Already a potential Boro Legend
Totally agree. I was not at all convinced and I'm so happy to have been totally wrong with hindsight and the taste of humble pie is lovely. Been great to see him improve

Interesting to hear. You hardly ever hear a player say things like this. They are usually bullish and full of bravado.

So very refreshing to hear one being honest. He still gets the odd pelters on here. I think he's come on leaps and bounds. Massively improved over the last 2-3 months.

Certainly well worth the money. Once again credit to the summer recruitment.
“He still gets the odd pesters on here”.

He shouldn’t let that get him down, Michael Carrick was all the useless chunts under the sun 3 months ago. At least the manager gets a few games grace, with some Boro fans the difference between the first and second half can be career ending for players.

Some people still haven't forgiven him for how he was at Wednesday. He'll always be **** no matter what he does from there.

He's borderline become my favourite player since then. And I never thought he'd recover from how poor he was that night.

He's a brick. What is it about left-back legends at the Boro? Quedrue, Friend, Engel. We have to have a slightly cracked marauding left back. He's still learning at this level, but you'd back him to succeed purely on character. Danish people are cool anyhow, and he's a typical example
And don't forget the legend that was Pog.

The problem with Engel is he drops so many basic errors defensively - i don’t know if he can improve on that. He’s not a kid, he’s 24. I like his attitude and he definitely offers something as an attacking threat. I think his best position would be in as left wingback but he ideally wouldn’t be your first choice left back - sorry 🤷🏼‍♂️

We need players like Engel - he knows he hasn’t been perfect , but does his best to make up for it, and he was good enough to do that.

I confess I couldn't see why we signed him after that first game, but As he came back he won me over with his commitment and effort. He throws himself into everything, and while he had some iffy moments today, I think that is due to lack of cover in front of him. I did notice after scoring the goal he went across to a number of players and spoke to them for more than just a quick word, does anyone know what he said or even what that was all about?

Engels of death metal.
I don’t think I’ve seen him make too many defensive mistakes recently , he just flirts with the idea and makes it look like hard work. A true genius of the modern game

He has just endeared himself to a lot of fans, by doing nothing more than being open and honest.
This guy is a trier who will run through walls for the club.

I think most of the errors he makes are due to the intensity of the English game; the back passes he's given away may be the result of the intensity of pressing in England.

It used to be that players were given a year to adjust to the pace of the English game, regardless of their age. Now, performance in a player's first 6 games are held against them months later.
