Laptop Recommendations

Cheers Gene, worth a look. I've never bought refurbed before, but i wont rule out if it means I cant get a better spec for a bit less cash. That said, I don't want to over-spec the kit i need

Cracking help on this forum with shopping. Anyone want to help with research for my Christmas shopping, I can provide a list of ages and interests?! Thanks in advance 😉

Loads of lower spec cheaper options on Dell site - I've had my Dell Inspiron for years & years and just upgraded hard drive/memory over time so you could go low and upgrade as you go along if need be.

Pretty much all laptops have memory that can't be upgraded now.
Interesting. I've usually had custom laptops so its not something i'd noticed.

Hopefully someone challenges it under right to repair and the practice is outlawed!

Go for it rooster, might offer some inspiration for my Christmas shopping, so far it amounts to socks. Again.

Right then............we have one set of retired parents who both rarely leave the house at the moment due to Covid caution. Neither of them have any real hobbies beyond watching sport (tv) and Boro (live) and going to the theatre. None of which is really an option at the moment. Any ideas? (Even as I'm posting this I know the answer is socks isn't it!).

Not something I've ever come across either - I wouldn't buy it if I couldn't open it up. The cheap one I bought only has one slot and far too little RAM to be of any use, but it only cost me $50 for a 16GB stick, so if anyone wants the 4GB I removed.......

Damn, they sound exactly like my parents, we buy them theatre tickets every year. Hand on heart that's true as well! For reasons you already said, that's no good, so yes, socks 😁👍

well, as ironically my old laptop died, my hand was forced and decided to go for this, which was a little over-budget but has an i7 processor rather than the Ryxen 5 or i5 ones i was looking at, so hopefully that will prove to be worth spending a little extra. taking me most of today to get it set up correctly and as i want it, but happy with the purchase - it's certainly very fast!

if anyone cares that is :LOL:

thanks again for all the advice, it helped me greatly to reach a decision (y)(y)

that looks a decent machine the ram is upgradable as well, so you could put another 8gb to take your machine upto 16gb Ram if you need it in future. if you want the latest version of Ms office cheaply you have a couple of options if you have someone in your family whos a student you should be able to get a student license which is much discounted, alternatively ebay

to be honest i've just got the 1 year bundle for mcafee and full microsfot365 - i didn;t want to faff about trying ebay downloads, i'm in the middle of applying loads of jobs and have interviews lined up all through next week so just wanted to get it sorted via the path of least resistance so to speak, the bundle was £60 instead of £130 which is didn't think was too bad. when it comes to renewing, i'll have the luxry of time to research a better/cheaper way of doing it

I think that's an update of the one I have. It's decent enough but I'm having to get it repaired as one of the hinges got knacked when I dropped a bit of food down it or something. So don't eat your dinner over it.

I pay £59.99 for my Microsoft Office subscription & I get 1TB storage on One Drive with that.

Great you got something, just want to comment on the Ryzen stuff. Do some comparisons on the CPU's. I just bought a refurbed Dell Inspiron 15 5000 with an AMD 4700U CPU and in reviews, its way faster than the equivalent Intel and cheaper by about £50. AMD are really knocking it out of the park lately with CPU's and graphics cards.
