Laptop Recommendations

Sorry, I know we've done this many times!

Budget is £500 max, ideally nearer £400. To be used for normal day to day work, NOT needed for any kind of gaming (unless minesweeper counts!). Ideally something I can pop down to Curry's this afty to collect as well would be a boon, so I'm looking on there right now, but I don't really know what spec I should be looking for!

My current laptop is about 7 years old and is painfully slow and out of date, I'm working on 2007 excel, powerpoint, etc. Key thing for any new laptop is speed, I like stuff to work rapidly, so what sort of spec should I be looking for please? I don't believe i need to store a huge amount

TIA (y)

Absolutely sounds like you need a chromebook. My favourite is the Asus flip but thats just slightly over your budget. Unless there is a sale on, it retails for £530.

We have bought 2 ACER aspire 3 15.6” this year - within your budget
Really pleased with them

One of the problems you might have is stock - the whole world has bought lap tops this year ;)

Is Currys open? Or are they just doing click and collect?
Don't rule out Amazon, if you can wait until tomorrow with prime delivery etc.

I'm really unfamiliar with chromebooks, are they suitable as a 'work' computer? Office 365, Skype, teams, all that stuff?

I've read they can be a bit limiting, but as I say, I know very little of them and dont want to invest in something that cant do everything I need

Good point, I keep forgetting about essential items and stores being open

Yes, I could happily wait for a prime delivery tomorrow

Its a pity you mentioned a tight budget because work have just given me a Dell G5 SE 5505 15" Ryzen 7 laptop and its a beauty. 8 core 16 thread, its like using a desktop.

highly recommended, but 1150 at PC world.

Yes they can have apps for teams, all the office apps and Skype. I understand what you mean. Chromebooks can seem so limited when we are all used to windows pcs and the power they have. Thing is, with so much being available in the cloud right now they have pretty much the same basic functionality as a normal PC.

The advantage they give is because the operating system is so stripped down you don't have to pay for masses of memory, a fast processor or a massive hard drive that you would need to run a Windows pc. For this reason I'm a fan of them because they give you so much more bang for your buck.

My advice would be to see what programs you need for a laptop and if its just office and home stuff, spreadsheets, word processors, conferencing software try a chromebook for the speed, cost and function. However if you have one program slightly different, for example if you ever edit photos, or run accounting software, then go for a windows PC as they will give you more flexibility

Spec wise I would look for Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM (16GB would be better), SSD 240GB and a full HD screen. You may struggle to get that under £500 though.

that's too much over budget I'm afraid - i would wiggle a bit for the right bit of kit, but that's way over

Yeah like muttley said, try and get lots of RAM and an SSD, it will make a world of difference.

I got an Asus Rog Strix 712 not long ago, it's an absolute beast and far faster than my PC. The only issue is it's a gaming PC, so when I turn up to meetings I like a super nerd.

I wouldn't recommend you get a Chromebook, we have one and I don't think you'll get away with it for what you want it for.
