Laptop recommendation

Depends what the course requirements are and whether they are graphics/video heavy in which case a good graphics card is required.

16GB RAM minimum and the biggest SSD drive you can afford are a must.

No experience of Windows S but its an add on to Windows 10 not a separate operating system I believe?

Also some new Windows laptops may not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 - if it can't then it's left stranded when Microsoft stops support for Windows 10 in Oct 2025 so that needs to be taken into consideration.

My last 3 Laptops have been Dell (good but expensive) and then my own configurations from PC Specialist - mix and match to suit your own needs/budget.
Thanks... my first laptop was a Dell and it lasted years. Good tip about W11 (y)

Its a configuration to be turned on or off.

In terms of Windows 11, it it says certified for, you'll be fine.

According to Microsoft the “S” doesn’t stand for anything in particular, but the company says Windows 10 S is streamlined for simplicity, security and speed. Windows 10 S will boot 15 seconds faster than a comparable machine running Windows 10 Pro with the same profile and apps installed, and it will run as fast on day 1,000 as it does on day one, Microsoft says.

How is it different from Windows 10 Home or Pro?

The big difference between Windows 10 S and any other version of Windows 10 is that 10 S can only run applications downloaded from the Windows Store. Every other version of Windows 10 has the option to install applications from third-party sites and stores, as has the majority of versions of Windows before it.

Windows 10 S will also come with Microsoft’s BitLocker encryption system for securing your files in case of theft, which some versions of Windows 10 Home do not have available. It will also receive the same updates at the same time as other versions of Windows 10.

Which apps will run on Windows 10 S?

Anything downloaded from the Microsoft Windows Store will run on Windows 10 S, which has thousands of applications available, including free, paid and trial versions of software. That will soon include the full Microsoft Office suite and Spotify, while Slack, Evernote, Netflix, Facebook, Adobe Photoshop Elements and many others are already available.

Which apps won’t Windows 10 S be able to run?

Any apps that are not currently available in the Windows Store will not be able to be installed or run. That includes Apple’s iTunes, Google’s Chrome browser and the full versions of Adobe’s Acrobat, Photoshop and the rest of the Creative Suite – or anything else that’s installed via the traditional Windows 7 or earlier way.

wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, likely to be a low end spec as well so unlikely to be upgradable to windows 11.

2.5k 😲on a laptop for school i hope she doesn't leave it on the school bus.
She walks to school and its almost exclusively to use at home. If its left on the bus its left on the bus it gets replaced, id never give my kids a hard time for being kids and doing what kids do - and lets face it many adults have done the same too.

as far as you go smalltown, youre kind of right - it wasnt £2.5k it wa sprobabmy closer to £3k total spend, £2099 for the laptop with an upgrade to 1tb memory, applecare, microsoft office and various leads chargers and a mouse. Not sure why you have an agenda against me already but crack on with it, bitter little nobodies like you are ten a penny and ive never met one thats worthy of much of my time yet.

at least you have apple care

i bought a new 1tb nvme ssd for £70 and installed windows 11 at the weekend. I have to say windows 11 looks great its mainly cosmetic tweaks new start bar, more functionality with windows explorer, seems more like a new skin rather than a full OS upgrade. No compatibility issues and as it was a free upgrade happy with it so far. i put my old 500gb ssd in an external usb caddy and i can boot to windows 10 with that, if needed.

Yeah, it's easy to buy things in a fantasy world!
What is your problem exactly? I mean beyond being an obnoxious cretin. Ive been here a day and youve obviously decided youre going to do all you can to make my experience on the board a miserable one. Why are you so angry? Why is it beyond the realms of reality that i bought a laptop for £3k? Why are you so judgemental. Seek help for your miserable existence thats clearly having a severe negative impact on your state of mind. Try spreading a little joy - it honestly feels so much better than being bitter and mean. If i post screenshots of the two orders would that he adequate to elicit a grovelling apology from you and a change in your ways?

i wasnt been flippant spending that much on tech its good to have cover and apple are pretty good with replacements
No i was kind of unsure if you were or not but i wasnt particularly offended of you were because warranties etc are usually a load of crap

good to know that apple are different so thank you

Reminds me of the old board and the days spent on fantasy watch braggadocio, how the cold grey days flew past!
So do I understand you correctly, now you are implying ive concocted this wild fantasy world where you can buy laptops online for money? Ok 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah. It looks like somebody wants to do the old "considerably rich than yoo" shtick.

Sad what some people need to do to try and make themselves feel bettet

How did you get the upgrade - Insider programme?

My laptop is suitable for the upgrade but I can't access it yet.

Ill take that as you accepting my purchse is genuine and youd rather be spared the humiliation of being forced into a public apology. Nothing to do with wanting to appear “richer than you” for all you know that might be a full weeks wages. Sad that you feel threatened by what other people have, be happy for me - even indulge me if you think im making it up - it costs you nothing 😉

Besides, to all the green eyed monsters out there - if i was going to creat and inhabit a fantasy world why on earth would it be one were i spend the money on someone else and not claim to have bought a hot air balloon or a hunting lodge in kenya or something equally outlandish? Oh i forgot, you rank laptops among such unattainable trappings - dear god what grim existences must permeate your beings, infested with envy over household electronics 😂🤯

Has anyone mentioned chrome books yet? If you just need office and internet I can think of no better
