Laptop recommendation

nothing to do with the make. amazes me that people are still being sold computers with traditional hard drives. YOU MUST GET ONE WITH SSD'S, regardless of make. also there must be other issues, probly windows updates.
They have to shift that stock of spinning metal somehow ;)

To be fair the OP did specify "Not Apple" in the very first post. Apple fanbois always have to have their say
A fact I acknowledged in my edit but FFS the guy was offering up some small info. He didn't need the sarcasm or the thread police.

To be fair I did find that useful. I know the OP 7 months ago said no apple but its better than starting a new thread on laptop recommendations.

Why do you have a penchant for snapping at posters? No need to add to the thread in that way.
I don't think it's snapping. It's someone asking for advice and being given advice he specifically asked not to get.

My specific advice is: don't fret on model. spec is what counts: minimum 16gb ram and a SSD. If you're running 2 monitors and they are both 4K, try and get one with a decent graphics card as most laptops fall short in this area. Usually on the motherboard and fairly poor. I actually have to run my laptop with an external GPU at home to power the monitors at a decent frame rate

Either someone has sold you a complete pup, you're being hyperbolic or you really need to get those laptops looked at. My work laptop is a Lenovo and even though it is laden down with every piece of security software that they can find in the catalogue it is booted and ready for work in well under a minute. My alternate is a Dell and just as quick, my home/gaming PC is a self build thing and that is even quicker but I keep security software on that down to defender and good practice. Assuming your laptop has SSD storage there is no way that any modern PC should take FIFTY MINUTES to load an office app.
Both bought at PC world. I know my way around windows and have removed every bit of bloatware. They've been back to PC world and returned no better. They genuinely can take that long to get to the point where a small office document is editable. It can be quicker but you're talkign about knocking off 20 minutes or so on a good day. I'm happy to accept that it may not be Lenovo as a brand. They may produce some decent laptops, but I'll certainly not be touching them again.

Your issue is software, not the hardware unless it came with vacuum pumps.

Bought a new macbook pro yesterday, looking forward to having none of the issues mentioned above - should think not for over 2.5k!

I have none of those issues on my sub-$400 Walmart laptop.
Yet!

You probably dont have the same performance either tbf so theres that - not that im too bothered, i use whatever work supplies - the mac is for my daughter who has just started senior school

Admittedly, I only keep the Windows installation for the few things that do not run under Linux and I added a NVMe drive for the Linux installation and I only bought it to replace a 10-year old HP which I felt was too heavy and had much lower graphics resolution.

I've bought cheaper cars...
So have I mate and I will again. Cars serve but one purpose though and I see a decent laptop as an investment in her future and if you cant spend your money on your kids then what else will you spend it on? Im passed buying myself toys and fancy watches i never wear and we cant really go to sporting events or exotic holidays these days and shes now old enough for it to be worthwhile spending that kind of money on

Youve lost me :D if it fulfills your needs then job done

No way on earth should any desk/laptop be taking 50 minutes to open an office document.

There's clearly a hardware and/or software issue that PC world should have identified but then we all know PC World are pretty useless.

Have you tried a fresh reinstall of windows and started from scratch again?

Daughter is wanting to replace (another) creaking HP laptop - does anyone have experience of the new(?) Windows 10S ?? Does it prevent any software installs other than through the MS store ?? Can it be switched off ? Her University requires some of their course specific software to be used. Other than SSID is there anything else to consider for work laptop these days (I can't keep up with the tech.... ) TIA

Depends what the course requirements are and whether they are graphics/video heavy in which case a good graphics card is required.

16GB RAM minimum and the biggest SSD drive you can afford are a must.

No experience of Windows S but its an add on to Windows 10 not a separate operating system I believe?

Also some new Windows laptops may not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 - if it can't then it's left stranded when Microsoft stops support for Windows 10 in Oct 2025 so that needs to be taken into consideration.

My last 3 Laptops have been Dell (good but expensive) and then my own configurations from PC Specialist - mix and match to suit your own needs/budget.
