Labour will face the same problem should a rubbish EU trade deal come before parliament.
Brexit was and still is a Conservative party psychodrama. Abstain and let them eat it. Hopefully it will destroy them.

Wow!!Not with Johnson and Rishi dishing out months of paid holidays, meal deals and other goodies to the masses, some people have had a very comfortable lockdown.
Bollox. especially if the someone else was CorbynTotally unfit for leadership. Labour would be 20 points ahead with anyone else in charge...
The only area where he blew it was in advising Tory MP's that their constituencies would not be going into a lower tier in 2 weeks time and challenged Johnson to be honest about the fact. Johnson will reduce the tiers for some areas on 16 December precisely because Starmer said it wouldn't happen.
Starmer once again shows he doesn't understand that the vast majority don't do nuance.
Totally unfit for leadership. Labour would be 20 points ahead with anyone else in charge...
I'm struggling to understand what Keir Starmer and co think this is going to achieve.
It's not going to go down well with impoverished people struggling in the current crisis.
That's a well argued and cogent argument. I don't know if the man on the Clapham omnibus will see it that way though. Wouldn't Labour's position be clearer if the whip was to vote against? And that would force some of the Tory rebels to consider their position a bit more carefully. As it is, they can vote against, knowing that the government will win. Labour could have held their feet to the fire.
As it is, it's going to be portrayed as Labour ducking the issue. I think Keir Starmer needs to take sides. Is he going to abstain on whatever cobbled together Brexit agreement as well?

The SNP and DUP etc always abstain on issues that are for England only with no direct impact on Scotland or NI.SNP and others took the same route. I’m a bit ‘meh’ about the approach but, if they had voted against (my preferred option) I think the Mail et al would have hammered them.

Nuanced maybe, but Keir Starmer's line on this isn't going down well. It's neither supporting the Tories nor opposing them..
Loose loose for labour, I think most will recognise the need for restrictions and the latest polls show high levels of support for these or even tougher restrictions. The only way things can improve is if test and trace or the testing system is fixed, which we all know won’t happen.
so if they go against this now especially when vaccines are less than a few weeks away from being started, it would do nothing but cause needless deaths and likely loose more public support.
and to be honest those who are very strongly against any measures being in place, will likely be towards the further right, which they have no chance of gaining their support anyway
Pog, most political commentators disagree with you. Starmer was clear in the Hoc yesterday why Labour were abstaining.
I agree. The Tories were 20 points ahead a few months ago-Starmer has caught up with them and in some polls has been ahead- what more do you want after only 12 months of a new government?20 points ahead...a line repeated endlessly on twitter, usually by bots.
To suggest that any Labour leader would be 20 points ahead on the polls shows a lack of understanding our current political climate.
I don’t care what establishment political commentators think, what does abstaining achieve? Nothing. It gives the government a free pass.
He’ll do the same on Brexit.
The only thing weaker than Johnson’s leadership is the accountability from the Starmer.
This is what holding the government to account looks like...
Pog - lets face it, you dislike Starmer and everything he stands for. You will any opportunity to have a go.
Interesting - those that took the same approach with Corbyn got short shrift from you.
Gives the Govt a free pass - bollox - The vote would have gone through anyway and all the press and news are talking about today is Tory rebels and how rebelling becomes a habit less than 12 months into an 80 seat majority.I don’t care what establishment political commentators think, what does abstaining achieve? Nothing. It gives the government a free pass.

Its not sitting on the fenceSitting on the fence is not "did good" whether it's by Corbyn or anyone else .
Dead man walking. At least it gave some Tories something to point at and say ‘and what about that then....?.’.
It will have taken the intense pressure off Johnson for a second or two, he didn’t look very well today on that clip in the news of all his own Tory MPs having a go at him.
