Kalvin Phillips

True but it’s a big game to miss Liverpool and Man City I was surprised
What would the Liverpool v Man City tell Gareth that he already doesn't know?

Gomez is unlikely to be in the frame.
TAA was injured
Elliott is unlikely to be in the frame.
Walker is a lock.
Stones is a lock.
Foden is a lock.

And Rico Lewis was always very unlikely to get minutes.

Whereas, in the West Ham game, you had Bowen, Ward-Prowse and Phillips - who have all been in and around the recent England squads.

It made sense for Gareth to pick West Ham v Burnley as the game to attend, instead of the Liverpool v Man City game - even though we all knew the Liverpool v Man City game would be of a much higher standard.

Fitness

Why else go then ???
Firstly, you have deliberately removed the first part of my sentence to change it's meaning.

Secondly, you are arguing that he went to West Ham on Sunday to see if Phillips was fit? Not to assess his performance, just to make sure he could run around a bit. And as he could run around a bit, he'll be selected regardless of how poor his performance was. It doesn't make sense.

Yeah but who from the Liverpool game does he really need to watch? Stones is an automatic pick and in good form, same as Walker. Grealish and Trent are injured. Joe Gomez? I think he’s quite a way down the pecking order now though I could be wrong. The point being that he knows those players inside out. He does need to see the likes of Phillips, Henderson and Ward-Prowse, and Bowen, because they’re competing for a place where there’s lots of competition or because there’s issues with match fitness.

And people will continue to go on about Southgate’s favourites but he’s left out Sterling and Mount when he had to. Of all the players available for England, you’d be hard pushed to find a manager who’d pick a squad that didn’t include one of those ‘maybes’ named above purely because there’s a dearth of options in those particular positions. Like any manager, Southgate will pick players he trusts to do a job for him.

Agree with every word Marv. I'll also add that he's probably seen multiple Liverpool and City games in recent months and he'll undoubtedly see many more before the end of the season.

Yeah but who from the Liverpool game does he really need to watch?

Jarell Quansah.

Having said that, I agree that Southgate was right to watch the other game.

Quansah should definitely be in the squad for the Euros. He’s been phenomenal whenever he’s played for us this season. He’s calm and confident on the ball, plays clever passes, makes important challenges and his positioning is great. His breakthrough into the team this season has me feeling way more confident that we’ll be fine once Van Dyke leaves/retires.

There's about 10 English CB's who deserve a spot ahead of someone who's played a small handful of games.

The bias is strong I see.

He’s slotted straight into the Liverpool team as though he’s always been a part of it, and has rarely put a foot wrong.

And if Konate was fit, he wouldn't be in the starting 11, nowhere near.

Granted he's done well, but there's literally someone over the other side of Liverpool who has been incredible this season for their team, in a struggling team and has more experience.

Quansah may be good for the future, but for someone who has played a small handful of games, taking him to the Euro's over much better and more experienced CB's wouldn't be a risk that is worth taking.

He's not been selected for the latest England squad.

The right decision by Southgate, again.
Phillips has only started about 4 games out of about 40 for England since 2021. In 2021 when he was last a regular, he was voted England mens player of the year. This idea that Southgate picks him regardless of form is just another of those tired old cliches that people who are desperate for Southgate to fail trot out.

Branthwaite is awful should not be anywhere near an England squad
Was always weak link in under 21 squad

Does the fact Bellingham is listed as a midfielder rather than a forward/attacker like Foden for example mean they're thinking of using him as a more traditional Central midfielder rather than a 10?

Bellingham has always been listed as a midfielder in England squads, and the only time Foden wasn't listed as a forward was the September 2021 squad.

I don't think it's an indicator of any change in thinking.

I was sad enough to check that too 😂
