Kalvin Phillips

Injured again.

Ben White has refused to be selected for England squads too, seems he's really spat his dummy out over being asked to watch match analysis.
Called up to play for England and refuses to play - I don't get that at all! Only a privileged number get to put the white shirt on.

He doesn't actually like football, so he's probably the sort of person who only sees it as a job and going away with England and not playing without getting paid isn't going to appeal to him.

I missed this, what did he find vexatious about watching match analysis?

Arteta seems the type that makes his players watch hours and hours of it.

Love this, he’s like the guy at work always refuses to do overtime and will nearly always use the line “don’t need the money”

Not someone you would want anywhere near an England squad then, sounds like dressing room poison.
It does seem strange, however, it seems his Arsenal team mates love him and have nothing but nice things to say about him.

Then again, they are bound to say good things, as he's a team mate. They're hardly going to turn round and throw him under a bus and label him a trouble maker etc.

"It has previously been suggested that White does not enjoy football but he says that is a common misconception and it is simply that he is able to switch off from it at home.

"I know people say I don't like football," White told The Telegraph earlier this month. "I go home and football is not on my mind. I can just be a normal person, relax. [But] when I am in here, it is intense."

"Unfortunately his form just hasn't been good enough. I've spoken to him - he knows that."

Well, well, well. Phillips is fit but not selected due to poor form. Who could have predicted that?:p
We had so many people telling us there was no way he’d leave out Phillips. Even Barney Ronay was banging that drum in the Guardian last weekend. It’s so tiresome. People will just move onto bashing him for selecting Henderson now though I suppose. The funny thing with him is that if he’d gone straight to Ajax then there’d much less discussion over his inclusion. Personally I think if he’s playing every game for Ajax then he should be in the England squad. As long as he was playing Saudi Arabian football then no, definitely not. But he’s playing at a good level now.

That's not exactly disputing it.

He doesn't like football unless he's playing it himself.

He wasn't getting a game at the World Cup and he withdrew in a mood over that and has since refused to be called up.

It'd be interesting to see how reacted at Arsenal if he ever lost his place.

He doesn't say that. Just able to switch off when he gets home and enjoy other things. Good on him. He appears to be very motivated and one of the best trainers at Arsenal. We don't know what happened with England. Southgate is clear he didn't fall out with the coaching staff as reported and that the door is wide open.

Quite a lot of players haven't enjoyed playing for England over the years. Paul Scholes being one example who sacked it off. If he was a Boro player doing the business for us and sacking off England would we care? I wouldn't.

He doesn't like watching football and never has, he's a "normal person" outside of training, in his own words.
He likes playing it.

Barring one half season in 2018, he's played virtually every match since his debut, so he's always been training with starting in mind.

It's only at England where he wasn't a guaranteed starter, and where he's had issues because of it.

I would have an issue with a Boro player doing the same thing, but I'm not one of those club before country types.

He didn't have an issue when he was first called up in 2021 when he was at Brighton.

In fact if you watch the interview of when he found out about his inclusion in 2021 and told his family, he was emotional.

The fact he dislikes football is a screen over this England saga. There is far more to it than 'disliking' football. Whether we'll find out is anyones guess.

When he was first called up, he obviously didn't know he wasn't going to play regularly.

He obviously will watch a lot of football though. I can guarantee it will be far more than you and I watch. He doesn’t just rock up on a Saturday and ask the gaffer who they are playing.

Why does it matter if he doesn’t watch more football on top of this in his free time? A lot of what you are attributing to him seems to be what he has said about his dad.

Ben White: “My dad has no idea about football to be honest. It’s quite funny, but it’s nice too. I’ve got the coaches here to tell me what I need to know anyway, so it’s nice not to have any added pressure or anything outside of that. I know I can go home and switch off from everything, think about other things, and they just tell me I did well
“That’s how my life is arranged. When I come into the training ground, it’s all about football – 100 per cent focus. Then when I leave, I switch off from it. I don’t think my dad has ever said to me ‘shall we watch a game on TV?’ He absolutely isn’t interested in that, I don’t think he’s ever watched one on TV.

“But he comes to watch my games to be there for me. They are there for me every single game. I think my mum has only missed one game of mine ever. It’s literally to watch me play rather than the game.”

I personally think White is being a total spoilt brat with the whole thing. Especially if there is any truth in his attitude being based on not wanting video analysis. Get over yourself you entitled pr*ck.

There is much much more to it than 'I don't like football'

And if anyone believes that, then more fool them.
