Just Stop Oil protester punched and kicked

Oh well at least that can bring you some comfort as the world burns and our childrenā€™s futures are ruined

All respect to the protestors in my opinion. They arenā€™t resorting to violence to get their message across but certainly people are taking note. (Hence the need for disruptive rather than non disruptive protest)

At least they can say they are trying to do something as most just sleep walk into or ignore the biggest crisis mankind has ever faced.
And yet there is no conclusive evidence that lowering man made carbon emissions will lower temperatures. Itā€™s not like we havenā€™t had periods of warm weather in the past, before the Industrial Revolution, but not that long ago (relatively) in history - the Middle Ages for example were warmer than the current period. What we do know is that ā€œclimate changeā€ will be used as an excuse to tax us more, be used as an excuse to limit our movement by restricting or even removing private vehicle ownership and very probably limited chance of ordinary folk travelling abroad. Wait till carbon scoring comes in as a means of deciding where you can travel to, then weā€™ll see how many on here are clapping just stop oil when they canā€™t go to an away game because theyā€™ve used all their carbon credits for the month - itā€™s coming trust me. Weā€™re already seeing 15 minutes cities spring up with the idea of restricting everyoneā€™s travel to their own little space inside each city. Liverpool council have only today announced they have approved plans to split the city up into 13 ā€œzonesā€, and just about every council in the country has already committed to doing the same. Look at all the ULEZ cameras springing up everywhere - driving your own car will soon be a luxury reserved for the rich or privileged, the rest of us will be severely restricted on where we can go

Hmm, that sounds interesting, I might look into that, never thought of that. They might just think I'm some climate change denier moron though, and that couldn't be further from the truth. It wouldn't be them answering questions mind, it might be more me telling them what they may not realise about the renewable energy sector. They're a big movent, getting a lot of press, but I think their time and effort could be better placed (in the UK at least), but it's not up to me to tell them that. I think they're wasting the airtime they get, for the effort, at a super critical time.

I can't see them changing their name though, which I think is one of the key problems, it's like it's trying to tackle problem 95, without tackling problems 1-94 which are causing far bigger problems immediately, which makes problem 95 worse.

The thing is I've got the exact same overall aims as them, but they just don't seem to be realistic or realise what the main problems the renewable energy sector is facing, and what they've actually managed to achieve given the horrendous hurdles.

The problem isn't fossil fuels, it's us and our need for them and our batshit rules guaranteeing this need for longer. We regulate for a 1 in 100,000 risk of something small and low cost, not realising it's slowing down a renewable energy project, aiming to limit the damage of an absolute certainty, which has a massive risk to life and cost.

I had a battery grid project delayed for 6 weeks the other week, because the canal and rivers trust (a charitable trust/ public company I suppose) would not let the client put a guy across the canal in a boat to get an accurate depth, which would have took 5 minutes (the depth given by the C&RT was out by over a metre/ 30%, according to a remote survey). This was on the critical path too, so any delay there, is a delay to the end date (and adding millions). Then we got held up for another two weeks for taking water out of the canal (which was in the approved method statement and risk assessment for 6 months), when some member of the public complained, although it was already approved, which we demonstrated. Then the C&RT decided that they wanted 10k for a licence from our client for the water (effectively a ransom, would have took another month to sort the legals out), yet we were only taking 20k litres per day max (which is permitted abstraction by the EA) and the canal was being topped up by an EA river (for free). All of these **** ups jacked up our invoice value too (to sit there and do nothing), we didn't lose out, but the UK did, as people don't look at the bigger picture. That cost maybe two months, but in total I reckon the ludicrous delays (from various parties) were getting on for 6-12 months in total.

I spend most of my working life trying to get renewable energy and battery schemes built, and all the UK does is shoot itself in the foot over, and over and over again, it's laughable.
I imagine many of them like you are reasonable people who want to engage in constructive discussions and raise awareness. I certainly donā€™t buy into the ā€œcrusty tree huggerā€ narrative tories like to push.

My daughter is obsessed with kurzgesagt and they have some really interesting and idiot friendly (ideal for me as not my area at all) videos about climate and energy usage, including several on nuclear.

To quickly fact check some of that :

Firstly, evidence suggests that the Medieval Warm Periodmay have been warmer than today in many parts of the globe such as in the North Atlantic. This warming thereby allowed Vikings to travel further north than had been previously possible because of reductions in sea ice and land ice in the Arctic. However, evidence also suggests that some places were very much cooler than today including the tropical pacific. All in all, when the warm places are averaged out with the cool places, it becomes clear that the overall warmth was likely similar to early to mid 20th century warming.

Since that early century warming, temperatures have risen well-beyond those achieved during the Medieval Warm Period across most of the globe. The National Academy of Sciences Report on Climate Reconstructions in 2006 found it plausible that current temperatures are hotter than during the Medieval Warm Period. Further evidence obtained since 2006 suggests that even in the Northern Hemisphere where the Medieval Warm Periodwas the most visible, temperatures are now beyond those experienced during Medieval times (Figure 1). This was also confirmed by a major paper from 78 scientists representing 60 scientific institutions around the world in 2013.

Secondly, the Medieval Warm Period has known causes which explain both the scale of the warmth and the pattern. It has now become clear to scientists that the Medieval Warm Period occurred during a time which had higher than average solar radiation and less volcanic activity (both resulting in warming). New evidence is also suggesting that changes in ocean circulation patterns played a very important role in bringing warmer seawater into the North Atlantic. This explains much of the extraordinary warmth in that region. These causes of warming contrast significantly with today's warming, which we know cannot be caused by the same mechanisms.

Overall, our conclusions are:

a) Globally temperatures are warmer than they have been during the last 2,000 years, and

b) the causes of Medieval warming are not the same as those causing late 20th century warming.

Don't condone the behaviour of the thug, and he should be punished for his disgusting actions but it would be very naive to think these protestors for JSO have not had this coming.

There are ways in which you can protest to get your message across. So far they're alienating themselves with the general public. The general public are the ones suffering, not those higher up.

If they protested in a different manner, that didn't affect Joe Public, then they'd no doubt get much more support.

If they continue doing what they are doing, then I'm afraid it's likely to only going to get worse.

I'll give that a watch later, always good to see different viewpoints and idiot-friendly things. Nuclear V climate seems a good one to start on. I used to be very pro-nuclear but now, due to the cost it just doesn't make any sense, not when onshore wind is like 1/4 the price, miles quicker, less risk, and everyone would prefer a windmill over a nuclear plant on their doorstep. I'm now thinking we should just massively over-generate with wind and solar (wind for winter/ solar for summer) and just store in whatever cheap means possible even if it is ludicrously inefficient (for now). 50% efficiency can be great if it cost peanuts for energy and peanuts to store. Nuclear and battery storage is expensive to generate, and expensive to store, albeit does work very well.

I'm also going to look up when I can watch one of these Just Stop Oil things, need to figure out what they actually want with certainty before making an **** of myself, saying they're doing it all wrong.

Protest is about causing disruption.
Its a basic human right.
Its not like the Salvation Army standing on the street corner, handing out leaflets and hoping for converts.
The suffragette`s started off with placards and meetings - but no one listened.
They had to take drastic action and some even died for the cause.
In USA, when one black woman wouldnt sit at the back of the bus the fight against racism in the USA took a different turn.
The mass trespass on private land at Edale lead to the opening of footpaths and access to common land - including the Pennine Way
Until that point rights of access was confined to the landed gentry.
Without the right to protest and to make people aware - if we only consider our bubble being disrupted, we are missing the point completely.

the galling thing is they're not really even protesting for the govt to change its policy per se, just to carry out the promises they have democratically already agreed to do.... and are riding roughshod over.
