Just after 7...... no new signings......

I am fine just annoyed i see it as a missed opportunity not to get a striker . I fear we will struggle to keep Hackney vdb and mcgree into next season and theres no chance we can replace that quality.
I seem to recall similar comments from everybody last September that we had a “very poor transfer window” and our recruitment had been woeful. Honestly some of the depths of despair shown needs to be reread to understand things change players suddenly click.

And by the way we have just sold a player for £15m who you described as a poor man’s Sam Ameobi just 4 months ago! If that doesn’t cheer you up.

We did have a poor window in the summer we gambled on a striker untested in English football in latte and a young kid in coburn it was a ridiculous decision. To then not recruit a striker in January is crazy. Carrick deserves far more than the backing he is getting. Carrick wont be here forever and its another season written of as transition

Despite the striker situation it wasnt a poor window. We recruited a lower league tested player we've made a very good profit on, a very good defensive utility player who is one of the first names on the team sheet

We do need a striker, of course we do, but if the player wasn't there at the right value, we did the right thing waiting.

Even if we'd bought one in, out chances of promotion this year were negligible.

MC, SG, Bausor etc all seem committed to the long term plan, and I'm happy to back them on this.

yin and yang though. The opposite to what you are professing is that the club spubked it's money on a CF that wasn't in their list of striking options, or put the club at ffp jeopardy by signing signing a cf that they didn't think was right for us longer term, in the hope that he would score enough goals to squeak us into 6th.

CFs don't grow on trees, we have a very specific skill set, age, and price range, and can't afford to get it very wrong. I would love us to get a new CF, but I'm glad we didn't panic buy last summer or this winter. Our business has been from an FFP perspective very good and from a playing perspective sensible.

Ayling covers a position where we have struggled this season, we've been playing a 19 year old CB in his first season at this level at RB most of the time. It is also effectively a 6 month trial for a longer contract. With only a modest loan fee / wages hitting ffp

Thomas another sensible and low ffp loan to cover a troublesome position.

Lets say those two are costing a total of 700k on our ffp.

Azaz, 2.5m on a 4 year contract. Good signing, versatile, can play 8, 10 and LW, 2 of the positions covered by Rogers. with wages probably 900k added to this years ffp

So we've 1.6m negative to ffp.

Rogers, 7.2m positive effect on our ffp (after cities cut and balancing off our 1m for the initial purchase). So that's a good 5.6m positive (or more if Rogers hits the targets set by villa). This will go in the "ffp kitty" for the summer along with the extra 6m as we wave goodbye to Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletchers ffp impact at last and the other 5m head room we already had. If Gibson chooses to invest this summer, he can loan the club the capital to do so, knowing we can afford to go our and buy 2 maybe 3 big players for the championship in the 4-8m bracket. This summer we will see more Lathe 1st team transfers than Silvera gambles.

For the record that doesn't mean we have a kitty of circa 17m, it means we can incur 17m extra of costs. We could spend 25m+ on new players and gamble that if it doesn't work we sell Hackney the following year which will keep us safe from ffp risk. The risk in that is that Hackney could get injured then we're in trouble.

I'm mildly disappointed we didn't bring a striker in, but agree fully with Frozen Horse above.

I don't think we have the squad and consistency to challenge for the last 1? 2? playoff spots, and cant see the point gambling on getting a striker in only for it to backfire one way or another. Chances of getting another Archer in, slim.

Consolidate this season, have a right good crack next 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

If the right man had been available then I'd be disappointed, but were we even linked with anyone beyond paper talk and Newy's ramblings?
I'd hope that we've got targets in the summer and that we get them done early so that we aren't playing catch-up again. If we can hit the ground running and just be adding squad/development players then I'll be confident that we can challenge. If we repeat the slow starts of the last two campaigns then you'll be right to ask questions.
I know that doing business early isn't easy and a lot depends on the PL roundabout getting into full swing, but I'd expect us to be shopping for players who aren't likely to be getting PL interest so it's not inconceivable that we can have the squad pretty much done and ready from day one.

After thinking about it, I’m not disappointed we didn’t sign a striker. I’m disappointed we let Morgan go when we didn’t really need to. He was a creative influence and has the ability to unlock defences like nobody else in our side can. I don’t really see us having a player with that capability now.

I haven’t seen much of Finn Azaz but I’m not sure he’s the type of player to beat a man and slide through a pass the way Rogers did? Correct me if I’m wrong.

I fear we’ll struggle even more against the sides who play a low block now. But praying I’m proved wrong.

I kinda agree, although from what I've seen of Azaz at Plymouth, he has good feet and isn't afraid to shoot, which is what you need against the low block. But yes, Rogers is a miss and I'm not sure what we get out of letting him go in January. I can only presume that it's a little bit of an advittance that we are unlikely to go up this year, so saving the FFP space for a summer splurge and of course creating space for players to get embedded and get experience for next year so that we can get a good start.

I think teams like Southampton and Leeds would have struggled with the injuries we have had, so it isn't a commentary on the players, or manager that we won't go up.

Lots of players should be ready to go next year that have ben learning this one:

RVDB:
start of 23/24: had 4 career starts and 0 at this level.
start of 24/25: acclimatised to us and the championship, will have 30 starts under his belt mostly at this level

Hackney:
23/24 32 starts at this level, will have around 65 next season

Azaz:
15 games to get acclimatised to how we play and a summer training camp too. Will be fully part of the team by next year

Bangura:
Had a taste this year and will have summer to integrate

Lath:
stepped up a level, will have 20+ starts at this level next year, and a full season of training and learning

Silvera:
This season will do him a world of good, finish it with 1500-2000 minutes of championship football under his belt.
