Joy Division v The Smiths

Love them both, if you chuck in New Order and Mozz/Marr solo works, I would have to edge towards the JD lads.....such a shame Hooky and Barney are on bad terms, not surprised Morrissey and Marr are!

Impossible to choose my own personal preference, but musically I'd argue The Smiths have produced consistently better music across all their albums than JD.

But if you include New Order then its a much tougher choice.

Smiths were interesting, but they leave me feeling very depressed.

In contrast "Love will tear us apart" I find uplifting.

Both - no need to choose between them.

Different era, different styles etc. Comparing the two is like comparing football with cricket. I love both and room for both in my life but both totally different things.

My one regret is I never saw joy Division at the Rock Garden, I would have if IC hadn't did what he did but I did see New Order there and The Smiths at the Town hall shows and other places.
True...for me it was always between The Smiths and The Wedding Present...I found I could relate to Gedge much more than Morrissey.

I don't know much about joy division so i just had a quick read up on them.

Didn't realise the remaining band members are New Order. Everyday's a schoolday!

definitely Joy Division for me. More intense, powerful, lyrics deeper and more subtle imo. Listen to Joy Division Peel sessions, especially 'Colony', 'Exercise One' and you'll see. This music never seems to age. Ian Curtis was a real poet.

The Queen Is Dead is a great album.
No, it's a magnificent album.

Just to say, as we all know well, Musicians become instantly better after they've died.

OK listened to the Smith's on Amazon Music for over an hour, it's not for me. It's still dull one toned poetry. If I want that I will go to a Hughes, Sassoon or Owen recital, they were good.

I’ve always been a fan of Joy Division, would have been interesting to see how it all would have worked out had Ian Curtis lived and whether the music would have developed in the same way as it did with New Order, who I also like.
I saw the Smiths at the time and couldn’t get my head past Morrissey, so pretty much discounted them. However, in lockdown, I read David Byrne‘s autobiography which then led me to Johnny Marrs autobiography, which got me listening again to the Smiths, I think the music is great and feel like I missed out a bit in the 1980’s.
just finished Hookys first book on JD and moved on to Substance, will be following that up with Fast Forward by Stephen Morris. Also recently watched Control on Netflix.
JD the better for me but The Smiths still well worth listening to.

This feeds Morrisey to the fishes
