Joy Division v The Smiths

Is that 'How Music Works'? It's in the book pile next to my bed to start reading soon
Yes, that’s the one. I’m almost sure the link between the two was the mention of Johnny Marr playing on some Talking Heads songs (nothing but flowers) that sent me down that route. I could have gone down the Kirstie McCall route and probably should’ve done 😍

On reflection I think JD were a lot better than the Smiths, I don’t think the Smiths ever reached the levels of hauntingly beautiful works of art like ‘New Dawn Fades’ or ‘Atmosphere’, songs that for me are actually uplifting rather than dour or depressing. My favourite Smiths song is ‘i know it’s over’ which is also a work of art but I think it’s just a level below. Again this is only my opinion, there’s no right or wrong here. We will probably never see the likes of either of these brilliant bands again

I've always been a fan of Joy Division, would have been interesting to see how it all would have worked out had Ian Curtis lived and whether the music would have developed in the same way as it did with New Order, who I also like.
I think if Ian had lived JD would have got as far as Power, Corruption and Lies but no further. He wouldn't have allowed it.

There was a suggestion in Peter Hooks book that Curtis had wrote to his mistress saying that he wasn’t happy with the band although Hook said the others had no notion of it. Probably all part of the mystique.
