Joy Division v The Smiths

As far as lyrics go The Smiths had a few novelty lines which were punchy but JDs are carefully crafted pieces of art. They did 50 songs in a period of 2 or 3 years all of which except one I love to bits. Maybe it was done to make all the others stand out.
Who knows what we might have witnessed if Curtis had not decided to check out early.
Never like comparisons eg Ronaldo George best. Best be grateful we have lived in times with these special talents.

Ha ha ha.....................the Smiths lyrics were superb. Thats not to say I am picking them. Oh go on then I will. The Smiths for me. Did not need to post that as the O.P knows I love both. Maybe if J. D had stuck around a while longer it might have been the other way around.

I suppose that would depend what activity you had in mind.

For me The Smiths are only bettered by The Beatles as a group when it comes to originality, influence and legacy. I do love Joy Division as well though.
If I wanted to be miserable I would go and watch Sunderland. It's one of the many bands who I think are overrated pap. A poor man's Leonard Cohen. That's the Smith's not the Beatles, the song writers for the Spice Girls were better, and that's pap too.

Absolute rubbish, and one of the laziest statements ever is to claim The Smiths are miserable. I assume you've never listened to Leonard Cohen or The Smiths if you think there's any comparison either lyrically or musically.

Can you imagine Leonard Cohen coming out with Frankly Mr Shankly, or Vicar in a Tutu ?

Both were ground breaking in their own way.
For obvious reasons The Smiths lasted longer, but New Order were a fabulous evolution of the Joy Division brilliance.

If I had to pick favourite songs from either band(s) they would be mainly Joy Division and New Order, but I absolutely loved and still love as many as twenty Smiths classics.
They are both unmistakable, distinctive, innovative ground breakers of their generation and in many ways the soundtrack to my 80's life.

The Spice Girls? I just don't know what goes on in some minds.

They were both at their best during my younger days, so yes I have listened to them, far too much in the Smith's case. I would not cross the street to watch them, awful dirge, about as good as his political beliefs.

Jonny Cash was out of his league as was Cohen, as were Stock Aitken Waterman.

I have a special app on all music media as soon as it hears his voice it turns over to Cilla Black.

The Spice Girls were also a great musical act. Not everything has to be trendy or cool to be good.

I appreciate What Makes you Beautiful by One Direction or California Girls by Katie Perry as much as I appreciate say A Kind of Blue by Miles Davis or Northern Sky by Nick Drake - they're all great pieces of music in their own right.

No they were, you're wrong.

Just because you dont like them, doesn't mean they weren't great and the fact that they're popular is irrelevant.

Musical snobbery doesn't make you cooler you know.

Inverted musical snobbery or the ability to appreciate pop music for what it is, rather than it having to be all obscure and cool.
Nobody is saying other popular music can't be liked.
The thread was comparing two bands of significance to a lot of people judging by the responses on it.
TSAB popped up with a ludicrous comparison to the Spice Girls, to which you seem to have seen the need to build on.

It's like comparing Viduka to Boksic and then somebody saying yeah but what about Barry Robson, he was great.
