Jonny Howson hoping for new Boro contract

as he hopes to continue playing. I for one would give him another years extension. I know at some point we wont but he has arguably been the best of out midfield once again. I know Hackney has been played further forward and its affected his game but still feel Howson is the pick of the midfield. Certainly ahead of Barlaser and I don't see O'Brien in that role should he stay. In fact I am not sure where his best role is. Possibly back at Forest but to be fare the lad had a bad injury.
Howson is starting almost every game so until we can bring someone in for his roll and he is demoted to a bench warmer I say keep him. His are big boots to fill.

Howson is still the best in our squad at what he does. That's not because he is still amazing, he's definitely declining year by year, but it's because the recruitment team have failed to find anyone better than a 36 year old Jonny Howson. They've definitely tried to replace him but they keep getting it badly wrong. If we go into next season with him as first choice again then it's just more failure from the recruitment team.

We should have someone who is as good as Howson was several years ago ready to take over and make this question really easy. I'm not against him still being in the squad if the finances are good, he's good enough and fit enough, but he shouldn't be our best option.

I did think he looked a bit off the pace vs Sunderland.

It's to be expected that he is now going to be on the decline, we just have to hope that it's not going to be a rapid decline and he can play another season at this level.

I'd give him another year but I'd like to think he'll be used more as a squad player. Really need to sign a decent DM in the summer.

I think it depends on what happens with Hackney and O'Brien, We can't afford to lose Hackney, Howson and O'Brien out the squad and be left with Barlaser plus whatever cheap value players come in as a gamble.
It would be like the season we let Cattermole, Boateng and Rochemback all leave in the same summer and replaced them with Digard. We ended u with Bates in the centre of midfield and got relegated.

It's one area of the pitch we can't afford to gamble!

I'd give him another year. He maybe 36 in May but he's never injured and already played 30 times this season. It not like he's a bit part player who's legs have gone.

He's an absolute model professional. I don't even think a new contract would be 'sentimental' or 'one for the boys'. He more than deserves one.

I guess it does have a couple of factors. The biggest one being can we actually finally replace him with 'as good' or better? We've had this conversation for the last 3-4 years. We've still not managed it.

Also I guess his wage demands. I'm sure he's not overly ars#d and will almost certainly have them again reduced. They apparently have been over the last few years (once one of our highest earners).

I'd have him around even in a reduced game time capacity. He'd still be useful off the bench if we do managed to get 1 or 2 CMs in. Yet again we've been saying this for the last few years. Still first choice 😂

Also I'm sure Hackney will move on. So it's not like we are stacked in that department.

Another year would be beneficial for all - great guy to have around the place I would imagine, even if his minutes on the pitch decrease... and we need some continuity as who knows who will depart int he summer!

Wasn't Barlaser brought in to edge out Howson to pasture?

From time to time, you end up with players that are the heart of the team and its difficult to let go. Leadbitter is an obvious, recent example.
Big part of the 'group', as Carrick himself might say.

I like Howson, been a great player for us.....but it's time to get ruthless. We desperately need to upgrade CM with more mobility/physicality and I think keeping Howson will just hold us back.

Very, very harsh I know....I know.....

I normally agree with your ramblings h_m - but not this time you wally ;)

I think for another year, you almost look beyond the pitch, and keep him for what he brings to the club not necessarily the team (which he does still contribute a lot too in my opinion)

I think there will be potentially a lot of ins and outs again this summer - a Howson type character, not part of the management team, but a respected part of the playing squad will be vital to help this summers arrivals go smoothly I would imagine and settle in, as well as the lads who are still relatively new to the league/ country.

I see him very much like our Jordan Henderson when he was at Liverpool - but Howson doesn't fiercely support the LGBTQ community as much as Jordan...

I think it's probably the right time for Howson to leave the club if we could keep Hackney. I love Howson and been a great club servant but he just looks like he's dwindling now. If he was happy to stay on reduced terms as a squad player then fair enough. But if we want to push on and challenge then CM is a position we need to improve.

Ooooooffffff - didn't expect that 😳😳

Hard to disagree with your post tbh, but I'm putting my ruthless tin hat on and just looking purely to the future and getting promoted. Just think this summer will be a bit of a crossroads for the squad and Carrick and the management team will have some very unpopular decisions to make.
