Jonny Howson hoping for new Boro contract

Funny how some I commenting on his last couple of games. He's been 'poor'. Yet no worse than our other 2 CMs.

I mean Hackney has been poor for a month. Do we get rid of him? Very short sighted to base his 'legs going' over 2-3 games (one against Chelsea).

He probably does need a rest. He's 35. Yet the reason he's playing is because I presume Carrick thinks he's better than the other options.

You'd think O'Brien would be given a run soon. We've probably paid a fortune for him in loan fee and wages. Also a very good champo CM. Yet due to injury we've only really seen him at LB.

Howson has played 30 times this season. I've seen many say over that period that he's still our best CM. Yet don't give him another year because of the last 2 games..... Crackers 😂

A no for me with Howson, he has been a decent servant and very reasonable player for us, no 2 ways about it.

We need new younger players in the team, he's 36 for crying out loud, his time is done here imho. We would be lacking ambition if we did give him a contract.
We`d be lacking experience with a team full of kids.

I reckon Howson would want to play regularly and not sure that is possible, if we want to go up next season (I know it's early to write this season off, but we are now on the fringes of the play-offs, rather than realistically challenging). I doubt he would wait to see what other central midfielders we bring in but could be a big turnover if as expected O'Brien goes back to Forest. I doubt we would pay much above 5M for him if that.
As always, a big summer transfer window for Boro, with probably no big names, and then a rush at the end of the window when the season is already 5 or 6 games in.
5 million for O 'Brien is nonsense. Showed nothing yet although missed a spell with injury but not much in his limited gametime before. He has 17? Games to force someone out in the midfield and prove his worth.

From Michael Carrick's Media Conference today:

Howson still wants to be at Boro next season. What does that say about his mindset?

I think it [the situation] just evolves. The timing comes into it. Johnny's done fantastic. He's the example of how to prolong your career and how to look after yourself, and what it takes to play at this level for so long. He's a real example for that. He's a pleasure to have. The way he trains, the way he's available for so many games and never likes missing anything. He's great. We'll have the discussions in the weeks to come. I think we're both pretty calm about things and relaxed and grown up enough to sort things out.

Is Johnny the link between Carrick and the rest of the group. The old style `skipper`?

Of course, [the link] is important. There's certain players you kind of lean on a little bit and speak [to], find their opinion…..they are in and around the changing room. Johnny is certainly that. He's the Captain. He goes about it in his own way in terms of he's not screaming and shouting in your face. He's very kind of thoughtful and, understands what it takes, so yeah, we speak a lot. Pick his brains. We're in it together, you know. We're all working together to find the right balance of how to be successful. It's certainly the players who’ve got a good opinion on that, and Johnny's the leader of them.

Forest allegedly paid 10M for him. I doubt they will just let him go for a couple of million. Mind you, if they get relegated, they might want him for their team, despite not wanting him despite signing him 18 months ago. I guess he's a 'casualty' of their crazy transfer policy since going up.

I’ve never heard Barlaser described as defensive 😂

Has he ever won a tackle for us? Or even put one in?!
When does he ever make an impact in the final third like Hackney is constantly doing ?

Tells me he needs moving on….a benign player for me

Not sure I would pay a couple of million atm. Time to prove himself.

Come on the lads played in the world cup final and won the Ballon dor also been at the elite level all his career howsons never even played a cup final atleast make a realistic comparison
I think the comparison is that he's 38, and is still at Real for all the right reasons, leadership and experience. I think all the other abilities are still a consideration but let's face it, he's no spring chicken but as they say there's no substitute for experience.

Forest are already planning for a big down-size, given the nailed-on points deduction and the threat this / next season of relegation. They were fleeced, buying players to keep them in the Premiership. They will be in deep debt. The likes of O`Brien probably won't cost more than a million. Forest will be keen to have a fire sale. He was coming into his own before his injury.

When you look at our ability to transform players from non-league and lower leagues, those considered below average and local lads, we have much in front of us, which doesn't mean having to wait for several seasons. Chuba was the best example. Hackney is another, so is Fry. Ayling and Howson have the experience every team needs. Rogers was an example of just how much a player can advance and develop in under six months. VDB, at 19, is playing beyond his age. Engle too, is showing the potential we recognised. It's hard to imagine Jones playing on dog-muck park four years ago.

It's not all bad news. It's about perspective and the much bigger picture. We were spoilt last season, so much so, after years of sterile, rigid, systemic Managers and approaches to the game. It was a relief to see open free-flowing football, scoring goals, winning away and almost getting over the line.

This season isn't over yet. There has to be hope and belief, faith in the boys and, most importantly, Michael Carrick and his staff
