Joe Lumley

Paul Ince said after the match "Everyone will point their finger at Joe Lumley but he probably saved more goals than he let in because he is top class."
Guess he’s got to try and defend the bloke.
I actually feel sorry for Lumley. He doesn’t set out to have these howlers and believe it or not, he probably feels worse about them then any fan does.
Mind you…. I’d give Ince a drug test for saying he’s a top class keeper.

He may be a lovely man, a good son and father, but that has nothing to do with his job and ability as a goalkeeper..

He is without doubt the worst keeper I have ever seen in a Boro shirt and I’ve seen some right howlers over the years. I really don’t think it is anything to do with the level he’s at. Basics of fumbling shots, mistiming clearance attempts, diving over shots, and so very much more. He has done amazingly well to get the Boro contract and even more amazingly that Reading took him on. Agent Ince doing us a right favour.
As a fellow human being, I wish him well in life, but he really can not continue as a goalkeeper at any EFL level in my book. He has more errors in him than my Chemistry ‘O’ Level and I was a walking disaster in a lab, the ‘beaker‘ of the class.

Brad jones runs him close. He didn’t have ability at least Lumley has some ability

Jones was poor at Boro, no question, but nowhere near as hopeless as Lumley was in goal, I have seen worse than Jones, nobody, not even Bettinelli was Lumleyesque.

Lumley just has a massive problem with concentration

He has all the tools in his locker apart from the one thing he needs more than anythign as a keeper

He is capable of the odd excellent game..........if he can't concentrate at the age he's at now he never will

We’ve had some dodgy keepers lately. Our current two have already made blobs this season. It seems like the ability to pass a ball to a teammate and sweep up has replaced catching the ball and saving shots!

I think that is probably fairly close to reality now. A brilliant goalie is not a worthwhile investment except for teams challenging for the Champions League. For most teams in domestic leagues, you'd spend more on a brilliant goalie than the value of what he saves you in points. The Moneyball analysis suggests that most of the time, no goalie could save the shots and headers that result in a goal.

Like De Gea and Lumley today - they both made mistakes but they couldn't have saved all those goals, and their teams failed to score. Ultimately the damage is -2 or -3 on the goal difference, that's all. Confidence issues - maybe. Disgruntlement - maybe. But put Lev Yashin in goal for either Reading or Man Utd and they'd still have lost.

Spend the money on attackers to make sure points aren't lost by failing to score.

This is the difference between somebody who tries to be a sweeper keeper and somebody who can actually do it.
On so many occasions Lumley comes out and absolutely hacks at the ball either makes no contact or puts it straight to the opposition.
Then you've got Steffen, take away the 2nd goal last week in which there was probably a push, he could do absolutely nothing about any of the other three we've conceded. He shown against Marseille he's good coming off his line and clearing If he has to. Thankfully he hasn't had to in the league yet but he's a massive improvement on Lumley.
I think that's the difference, that's why Steffen is under contract and has played for City and the only way is down for Lumley now. You have to be good with your feet

He's under contract at City but he won't play again after that gaffe against Liverpool. Let's be clear here, he's at Boro because he needs to be playing in a World Cup year. I don't know how much of his salary Boro are paying but it's money that should have been spent elsewhere.

Steffen won't gain 15 points for Boro. He won't lose 15 points either.

Boro last season - 16 clean sheets, but 13 games where they failed to score. 13 failed to score games is a lot of points given up.

It still makes me laugh that some on here were claiming we didn’t need to replace him in January. By far the worst player in my time supporting the club. It’s beyond belief that another championship club could watch him last season and actually buy him from us

I still can’t get over when he palmed a ball which was going out right to the opposition striker. I can’t remember which game it was, but it was the craziest, most baffling bit of goalkeeping I have ever ever seen.

2 errors.... Beaten at near post and one squirmed under him. I imagine he went there wanting a fresh start.

QPR fans told us he was a disaster and a strange signing. We then saw it with our own eyes. It's taken 3 games at Reading.

I'm surprised we didn't include a clause that he must play agabst us 😂

No doubt whoever comes in for him has a worldie against us lol
Also came rushing out creating a chance for them that was just over , rushed out and beaten to the ball for the 4th.
He thought about coming for the first - and was stepping backwards as it was headed last him.

Yep not me though.

He’s a terrible keeper.

Who will play in goal tomorrow?

I fully expect Lumley to start but I’m sorry I just don’t rate him.

    Joe Lumley is ok

There’s no way Lumley will be our keeper next season, wilder has already dropped him once. Wilder doesn’t do poor keepers never has.

    Joe Lumley is ok

We saw this at old Trafford on a huge night for the club and yet right from the off he made a huge error of judgement that really should have seen us 1-0 down in the first minute. It was the same style of error that did cost us at qpr so it’s not a one off he does it regularly and it will cost us.

A new keeper is a priority.

Are you serious Lumley better than Randolph err yes ok

    Lumley liability. It’s been coming….

No it’s not Lumley is a poor keeper end of it’s not about being a boo boy it’s about facing facts and Lumley is a shocking keeper. If that makes me aboo boy so be it but I said the same about bettineli
