Jobless rate hits 5%...

I think there's a good chance of the economy roaring back once the Covid threat is diminished, whilst ever there is a demand for hospitality and holidays then businesses will spring up to provide it.
Studies of the way people behaved in the 1920s after the Spanish Flu support this.

There will be some initial reluctance to attend large events, crowds and crowding will feel uncomfortable. There will be a period where people will avoid crowds. I was watching a You Tube of Neil Young playing "Rocking in the New World" at Glastonbury 2009. I was there close to the front, it was rammed I was probably in bodily contact with at least half a dozen complete strangers and didn't think about it. Would I be straight down the front if I could attend an NY gig tomorrow? Probably not? Six months time? Hmmm. Next year? I think so. Behaviour will change, people will wear masks and face coverings for quite a while after the pandemic has swept over us. Some people may be unable to move on but humans don't really change, in a few years time this will just be a scare story we tell our grandkids. Everyone had to stay at home Grandpa? No way...

It's curious how brexiteers like @ChrisTheRed want to risk public health and many deaths to help the economy. Yet vehemently defend a referendum that is also damaging the economy. Its an interesting hypocrisy. Still I think we all knew that people would try to hide the disaster that is Brexit by blaming covid.
You believe that all these recent huge job losses are more Brexit related than covid related?

House prices aren't dropping anytime soon.

I

Hopefully not for me.

Hopefully they will for the many people that can't afford to buy.

New builds seem to be flying out, the used market not so round our way. The cheaper homes aren't selling either. First time buyers appear to be struggling to get mortgages due to furlough and unemployment. Not sure what will happen when we release lockdown - will folk lose their jobs when furlough ends? Will it all go back to normal?

On the other hand I dont imagine loosing a family member to Covid is exactly easy either
Exactly - if you are struggling financially you will want the economy opening up. If you have lost a family member you'll want it locking down. There is no answer that is correct. But I am happy that the Government is prioritising health. Not sure what kind of society we'd be if we just ploughed on and ignored the virus like Trump wanted to.

Back to normal?
Nope. Furlough ends and unless everything is opened back up we will see mass unemployment the likes of which has never been seen.
The sensible option? With all this uncertainty extend furlough for the rest of the year.

Hmm, if we see unemployment of that scale I think the housing market may dip.

If we had analysis that, say, lockdown saves 60k lives now at the cost of 20k lives later & economic cost is £x, people can judge accordingly. Same if it says we save 60k lives now at a cost of 100k lives later at a cost of £2x.
Failure to look at all of the Covid crisis - the virus itself and also the collateral damage (mental health, economic impact, non Covid treatment delays) is ridiculous, to consider it a simple some want things open others don't is a very narrow viewpoint, any sensible person just wants a decision made on what's best overall i.e. proper analysis on the whole situation.

Surely even those against the lockdown have to admit it has worked to an extent, we were on 60k cases a day in early January, if we had no restrictions just imagine how bad things would have been now. Hospitals are already full in some areas even with these restrictions, dread to think what would have happened if that had continued, but the result would have been far worse than the impacts of lockdown

Why?
The working class could barely afford to buy a house before a pandemic working in full time jobs if at all.

On a slightly unrelated note doesn't anybody else find it astounding that a car can cost more than a decent sized house?

Really? Peru- early, harsh and Long LD - one of the world's highest death rates Belarus - loose LD doing great California - long, harsh LD same deaths as Florida who opened up months ago Spain Harsh LD still struggling- Japan no formal LD back to normal

Not as much death as Covid. And I think everyone acknowledges that, but you can't knowingly let the NHS become overrun which increases deaths on all measures because some people will sadly commit suicide. It's the very sad and harsh reality.

If the day was reached when a 45 year old was turned away from South Tees hospital for treatment on a work related injury and subsequently died because the wards were full of Covid patients there would be hell on. That's why we are locked down. Two more months and we should be seeing the back of this.
It's ok the suicides are doing you a favour and by-passing the NHS so as not be a burden. Happy?

If it doesnt work then why are our cases suddenly reducing?

Exactly.. There is no rhyme nor reason to it all really in terms of how it operates as a virus.

One things for sure we can't simply meander along as we are. There is no real confirmation in respect of the jabs and how effective they are - especially in the long term or in dealing with significant mutations

Chris, do you have any understanding of science?

Yes I do thanks. But as highlighted... The virus affects different areas differently. We've been following it though and it's worked well hasn't it... 👀

Im guessing you are all for just locking down indefinitely?
