Is Mbappe at the level of prime Messi/Ronaldo?

Just by way of comparison, the age Mbappe is now is the same age as Messi was when he scored 91 goals in 69 games across a calender year.

I don't think they're particularly close.

Not as good as Messi (but then didn’t receive performance enhancing drugs as a kid either).

Not as good as Ronaldo either.

Mbappe is an unbelievably good player who is undoubtedly world class, but Ronaldo and Messi are in my opinion the two greatest players to have ever played the game, so he's not at their level. Messi being the best, Ronaldo second.

Please can we not put Ronaldo in the same bracket as Messi.

One has stat padded his whole career, and the other one has taken his country to glory in both major competitions...whilst setting records that will unlikely be broken.

5 Champions League, 7 top league titles, 1 Euros, 1 Nations League, 5 Ballon D'ors. 33 major trophies won.
Most goals, assists and appearances in the Champions League of any player including Messi.
Most goals in the Euros, most international goals.
890 senior professional goals, more than any player in history. Including goals in Semis, finals and against every single top club.

I agree Messi is the better player, but Ronaldo has been an utter legend, who incredibly has played at the same time as the only player better than him in history. In my opinion.

Mbappe is a good player but I would never think to put him in a similar category to Messi or Ronaldo.
Did you mean to put 'player' in bold?

I watched that documentary about Mbappe on BBC last night and they said 'no one thought we'd have someone come along of the same ilk as Ronaldo and Messi so soon, but here we have it' (or words to that effect).

It was what what prompted the OP.

Well there is certainly an argument about their international achievements at the same age, though I'm not saying that is proof of anything.

He's very fast & fortunate enough to play for France.. I'd say Henry was a better player for France..

He's not dragging France to winning comps like Messi & Ronaldo did in their careers..

Well Messi didn't drag Argentina anywhere at this age. Ronaldo did help Portugal to the final of 2004, but he didn't drag them there and they didn't win it.

Mbappe DID play a huge role in France's 2018 World Cup win.

TBH as much as people will say Mbappe isn't close (yet) I don't think there's any doubt in my mind that Mbappe has had a better international career at the same point of all 3 of their careers.

No. I was trying to type quick with my fat thumbs and player came out in bold. I could watch Messi on YouTube all night long. Best player in my lifetime and nobody will come close for me. Ronaldo was a more complete player than Mbappe, who is explosive and has a shot on him but for me not in the same class.

Yep, his record is great, but if you actually look more in detail you'll see why.

His 5 CL wins came at a club that has consistently excelled in that competition.
The Euro's win he barely contributed. Portugal were terrible that tournament and in fact they won it without him on the pitch.
Most international goals....and yet when it came to it for Portugal...he hasn't scored a single KO World Cup goal to his name. He has scored the majority of those international goals against very weak European teams....hence why he's labelled as a stat padder.

He's been brilliant, but he isn't anywhere near Messi's standards and for him to be compared to Messi is an insult to Messi.

He's a very selfish player and one who will take personal glory over the team's glory.

In fact, both Maradona and Pele eclipse him IMO, as they have both done remarkable things on the biggest of stages, for their country, when it was needed.

No denying Ronaldo will go down as one of the greatest goalscorers ever....but as for taking teams to glory, there are better footballers in history.

I agree with most of what you say on this, especially since 2022, but I don't get why you think its such an insult to compare Ronaldo to him? Surely he is as worthy of being compared to him as anyone else, otherwise you might as well say its an insult to compare anyone at all to him? At least Ronaldo played in the same era and a reasonable comparison can be made. Its not like anyone's suggesting we compare Messi to Phil Stamp.

Which would, as it happens, be an insult to Stampy in my view.

I think Vini jnr is better than him, far more involved in games but I do think being at Madrid will bring the best out of him and we will see if he's a superstar or not.
I’m interested to know why people think him going to Madrid is where he’ll ‘prove’ himself. My view is that it’s another easy club for him, domestically only a slight step up from where he’s come from. I have no doubt he’ll score around 40 goals a season, win the league every year and be in the CL Final most years…but so would any top player playing as a 9 for Madrid.

Well he won't ever prove himself at PSG unless they win the CL. Which I don't think they will.

He probably will win CLs and Ballon d'Ors at RM, and a handful of league titles that are slightly more impressive than PSG winning Ligue 1.

The 40 goals a season thing isn't THAT common though in La Liga, certainly not if you take Ronaldo and Messi out of the equation.
