Is Andy Murray the greatest British sportsman

Yeah really. I don't really follow swimming, can ya tell. I can name 3 swimmers. Duncan goodhew, sharon davies and mark spitz. Also the diver bloke but I can't recall his name so, back to 3.
Haha. Surely you don't have to be a fan of swimming to know who Adam Peaty is? I mean during the Olympics in 2021 he was all over the TV, and eventually came third to Raducanu in Sports Personality of the Year. Im surprised anybody with a casual interest in sport hasn't heard of him.

PS The diver bloke was Tom Daley

Nope never heard of him even with all the context.

Hmm. Let me think how to word this.

The F1 team are active during the race, all the way through, every second. They are talking to the drivers constantly giving feedback on the car, weather, everyones position. They make the decision on pitstops, tyre and tactics. The driver is no more important than the car, and some would say less so.

They interpret the rules and rebuild cars everytime the rules change to get as much as they can from the rules.

The team behind F1 is huge. The cost for just running the team for a season is in excess of 150 million dollars. Thats running the team, nogt all the innovation that goes on to produce the cars. The innovations that come from F1 make it into road cars.

There is a team behind every sportsman or woman, but the performer ultimately goes out on their own 1v1, head to head, mano et mano, face to face... I am running out of cliches now, but you get my point. In F1 the victories belong to the team, some of whom aint even at the track and never attend.
The driver is often the key component though which is why they are along the highest paid athletes. Everything is a team sport to an extent but it doesn’t take away from their achievements

One thing is certain - driving a bit of metal that has been designed, built, and maintained by other people round in circles is not a sporting achievement - an engineering achievement possibly, a sport not
You clearly have no idea about motorsport, but it’s just as much a sporting achievement as going out and performing as part of a team in football, yes it’s about the engineering side too but the drivers make huge differences in performance. The demands on the driver are just as much if not more demanding than most other sports

Max Woosnam has to be worth a shout.

Among his achievements were winning an Olympic gold and silver in tennis at the 1920 Summer Olympics,[6] winning the doubles at Wimbledon, compiling a 147 break in snooker, making a century at Lord's Cricket Ground, captaining the British Davis Cup team, captaining Manchester City F.C. finishing ultimately runners-up for the Football League Championship in 1920–21, and captaining the England national football team.[7]
Great shout - was going to be my pennyswworth in this debate

Another interesting character worth reading up on is C B fRY

Peaty never lost a race in 8 years. Even then it was after fracturing his foot and not training properly for a couple of months. He was the first person to do the 100m breaststroke in under 58 seconds and also under 57 seconds. Only one other person has gone under 58. At one point he had the 20 fastest ever times in that event. I don’t know if that is still the case.

The only other contender I can think of is Ben Ainslie, although I don’t know much about sailing. If everyone is in identical boats, he’s up there. If his was somehow better than others, he has the same arguments against him as Lewis Hamilton.

Kenny Stuart.

Ben Nevis race (Fort William cricket field to summit an back) record holder 1:25:34 set in 1984 and still standing.
Snowdon Race 1:02:29 record still standing
Skiddaw 1:02:18 still standing
Ennerdale Horseshoe 3:20:57 still standing.
Multiple British champion fell runner and winner of most of the "big" races in the calendar.
Decided to try marathon running and ran 2:14 and then 2;11 in his first two efforts before his career was cut short by allergies.

If a woman is allowed. Jasmin Paris. Winner of The Spine Race and still record holder (despite the top men trying to beat her time since).

I know it’s subjective but to do what he has done ( winning Wimbledon ) to win multiple slams including the holy grail, in an era of three of the greatest to ever play the game in Djokovic nadal and feddera.

He must surely be in contention.

To Dominate in a single sport without any mechanical advantage ( bike car or equipment etc).

He could yet add to those slams as well as he’s on fire in Melbourne fight back.

No. It is obviously Phil The Power Taylor.
