Is Andy Murray the greatest British sportsman

Hendry
O sullivan
Phil Taylor
Mcilroy
In my opinion only 1 of them played sports. the other 3 played games. Snooker and Darts are no different to other skill games such as Chess. you need to be extremely talented and skilful to be at the top yes. but so do many other professions.

Peaty is as great shout as well.

Btw I made the mechanical caveat as cars change bikes change boats change as the sport evolves and they move teams.

Tennis like swimming ( after the suit era) is all about the constant the human body and both opponents have the same chance to win without any mechanical or aerodynamic assists advantaging one over the other
So the racquet hasn't changed for a 100 years?

There you go then, your argument is beaten due to Peaty's success.

I just moaned to my wife that if darts is included why isnt chess.. Great minds n all

Fair point about dominate I meant he live with the three greats who collectively dominated the sport.
Well he lived with them by being not quite as good as them but better than the rest. But it’s like saying Spurs “live with” the other big 5 clubs.

In a nutshell, he was a great player but I don’t think he is the greatest British sportsperson personally.

I see your point and if senna was british we wouldn't have this thread cos we would all agree. Except he was be disqualified too.

My gripe with F1 is, and I have said this, without a huge backup team the drivers would be useless. Most drivers can't change a clutch never mind rebuild an engine. It is, more than any other sport a team game.
Without tennis coaches, a load of financial backing and top class facilities Murray would probably be useless, same with any footballer, boxer etc

Hmm. Let me think how to word this.

The F1 team are active during the race, all the way through, every second. They are talking to the drivers constantly giving feedback on the car, weather, everyones position. They make the decision on pitstops, tyre and tactics. The driver is no more important than the car, and some would say less so.

They interpret the rules and rebuild cars everytime the rules change to get as much as they can from the rules.

The team behind F1 is huge. The cost for just running the team for a season is in excess of 150 million dollars. Thats running the team, nogt all the innovation that goes on to produce the cars. The innovations that come from F1 make it into road cars.

There is a team behind every sportsman or woman, but the performer ultimately goes out on their own 1v1, head to head, mano et mano, face to face... I am running out of cliches now, but you get my point. In F1 the victories belong to the team, some of whom aint even at the track and never attend.

Depends on how you define greatness, I Would always have Jimmy Anderson up there purely for doing things nobody else has in his sport on a world level. The greatest will always be subjective and i honestly don't think you can pick an individual. Much easier if you single out the greatest in individual sports
