I'd start Jones on Saturday

Vids made 101 appearances for us across 3 seasons. 21 in an injury impacted first season 04-05,43 in 05-06 and 37 in 06-07
He played on average 34 matches a season in a squad that had Hasselbaink, Yakubu, Maccarone, Nemeth, Christie, Job.
As well as being the best striker to pull our shirt on in my lifetime.
He started about 1 in 3 in all competitions I think? Correct me if it was nearer 1 in 2.

I agree he was a fantastic striker and he showed us the difference that real quality can make at the top level.

The only time I can remember Carrick trying something different was Leicester away last season and it worked a treat. We beat the would be Champions on their own patch, by being inventive, unpredictable and having an alternative game plan. It's baffling why we haven't done it since, especially in big games. Even mid game we never try anything different, its always like for like.

Could have easily brought McGree off at 60 minutes the other night for Ayling and put him in as an additional centre back. Jones on at RWB and Howson to sit in midfield. Fresh legs on up top. That way we would be able to double up on James, have another body in the box and hit them on the counter.

...............................Dieng

...........Ayling...Edmundson...Clarke
Jones.......................................................Borges

............Hackney...Howson...Azaz

..........................Doak
................................Conway
I’d definitely be trying this, been saying it myself for a while that he should be changing it up a bit, opponents have it easy in working us out.
We win games because we are so much better than some opponents but we would win so many more games if we were a bit more inventive and proactive in games.
In this system Doak could switch wings and have a spell up front.
I like it a lot.

Viduka made 101 appearances in the 163 matches we played in all competitions.

21/52 in 04-05 40%
43/64 in 05-06 67%
37/47 in 06-07 79%
101/163 or 62%

Nothing like 1 in 3 or 1 in 2.

Mmm did he start all those matches?

I said start in my post.

Don’t get me wrong he was a great player but injured a lot and not able to play two games in a week as I remember.

You seem to have an agenda?
He started 80 of the 101 matches he played for us.
He played 7089 minutes, so over 70 minutes per match he played.
He scored 42 Goals and had 8 Assists.
Had Viduka been fit for all of season 2004-05 I believe we would have finished CL, not scraped into the UEFA Cup.

Boksic was here 3 seasons too.
He played 76 matches, so 25 less.
He started 64 of those 76 matches, so 16 less.
He played 5603 minutes, so 1486 less. 74 per match played.
He scored 22 goals and 2 assists in 3 seasons. So 20 less goals and 6 less assists.
Boksic also took all penalties and 4 of his goals were penalties. Vids did not take them.

Is jones having a tough time off the pitch ?
He doesn’t really get a chance as a sub , I’d of had him on the left maybe it would assist our defence on that side aswell

I remember the story of boksics ‘house’ keeper getting lost after a run around Wynyard. He sent her back and ordered a new model . 🫣

No agenda you are looking for something that isn’t there.

I never mentioned Boksic.

I just have a memory of Viduka being out a lot and that we could have achieved some really big things if we had him in his prime.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the stats by the way.

The more games we flog Doak for a full 90 minutes the less frequently he's able to do this though. Need him to go into the Burnley home game fully firing, not off the back of playing consecutively against Millwall, Plymouth and Wednesday.
Doak is comfortably the better player, however Jones will have to play a part over this period.
I think he looked a bit knackered today. Jones should start against Plymouth imo

I thought Boksic was a truly world class player who only showed it on occasions as he was at the end of his career, Viduka had a better career at Boro and was excellent.
