How important to you is radio in your life?

I like a bit of Radio 4 these days but have gotten out of the habit of any others. I used to like Fischer on Tees but switched off the minute he went. Spotify has filled the gap that Radio 2/5 used to occupy.

There were a few other things you could get on Ocean Road at the time;)

Funnily enough, I've just got home, having spent the day on the beach there with my mate and our new toys - metal detectors!

I briefly lived up Horsley Hill

I was in digs there in 78 & 79. My land lady was one of the loveliest people I've ever met.

Did you ever dare to venture into the Horsley Hill Hotel? Only went in once & was thankful to come out alive.

I'd much rather listen to my own selection of music, I don't see the point of having someone else do it for me

Otherwise it's like someone else choosing what I eat, what I watch on TV, what I wear etc

Used to listen to the radio all the time before going out on a weekend, now I'm content with Spotify and listening to my own music in the car, and then whatever is on at work is whatever is on

I can't remember that place but there were a few spots where merchant navy cadets were fair game.

So how do you discover new music, if you limit yourself to your own selection ?

What about non music stuff - current affairs, comedy etc ?

I'm in the music business so I'm lucky enough to have all kinds of sources without having to listen through hours of DJ selections ie radio :)

Otherwise I'm not really interested in comedy etc although I don't mind Radio 4 at very low volume when they're banging on about wildlife in hedgerows or whatever, it's quite soothing hearing voices mutttering in the background

It wasnt far away - just round the corner in fact!
If they didnt know your face in there, they could get a bit raggie.
We used to frequent the Ship Inn on the old Sunderland Road or in The Stanhope.

There was The Marine and The Ship an Royal on Ocean Road - in those days you needed boxing gloves. I think Ocean Road has been cleaned up [if you know what I mean].
All dockers and contractors were in B&B along there.

Up until a couple of years ago I would've said "very important" but I am really struggling to find music stations that I like. 6Music is not the station it once was, I like a diverse range of music but too often I can listen to a good 30 to 60 minutes of 6Music these days and not like (or even recognise) any songs (especially on Mary Ann Hobb's show, which for me, is the all important breakfast show). Even using the Sounds app, I only really find myself listening to Radcliffe & Maconie or Steve Lamacq (much maligned in these quarters but I don't mind him and he always plays good stuff).

I subscribe to Sirius XM which is a platform that plays hundreds of satellite radio stations, but the few stations I enjoy have such narrow playlists that you've heard everything after a couple of days. Really struggling to find new stuff these days so seem to have reverted to 80's New Wave (Gem Radio New Wave on the internet is decent) or staples like The Decemberists, The Front Bottoms or Fountains Of Wayne on Spotify.

Tees reminds of the mask on your head which contains rats. Newcastle is even worse. Coming over the moors after Tuesday night matches listening to Stefan Penny was a switch off.
