How ambitious is Steve Gibson?(Episode 2).

Some of you may remember I asked this very question a few days before Michael Carrick was appointed boss of our beloved Boro. A flair for appointing ‘rookies’ like Aitor Karanka and with a penchant towards Manchester United in Robson and McClaren, I hoped Steve Gibson would confirm the appointment of Carrick with his unflappable ice cool demeanour and Fergie-influenced phenomenal winning record.

Gibson acted decisively and Carrick did not disappoint. Despite falling at the final hurdle on Wednesday evening, we have relished one of the best seasons of delicious attacking football not witnessed for many a season. It has been a joy to look forward to and a pleasure to watch. Carrick has brought out the best in players who could previously have been described as average and he very nearly succeeded in pulling off ‘winning the war’ from a season that originally looked as if the best we could hope for was a ‘great escape’.

So, almost but not quite, Mr Gibson. There is no question as to ambition in choice of manager. Carrick turned a sow’s ear into a silk purse. We Boro fans want more. I quickly signed up to my Early Bird season ticket with the Premier League a distinct possibility. I sincerely hope Steve Gibson’s ambition matches ours and he fills the silk purse with sufficient funds to make promotion a serious probability next Season. I’m sure anything less would not match the ambition of Michael Carrick… or us Boro fans.

We've - blown - millions on 'quality' players in the past, as have many clubs.. & like them we too have had less than anticipated performances out of, too many, of those expensive flops, charlatans or over pampered show ponies..

Gibson has backed his appointments as he can, within FFP regs, trying to make us competitive without being exposed to another 1986 type scenario..

Many of my fave Boro players have been the lesser heralded signings: Mustoe, Higgy, Pearson, Arca, Job, Leadbitter..

Hopefully Carrick & the backroom team will find enough or the right men with the right quality & attitude to give us the performances & results we are aiming for..

UTB!!

There are no guarantees. Or yet "serious possibilities" (whatever that means).

The "ambition" of Boro fans? :ROFLMAO:

FFS, did the last twenty years teach you nothing?🤷‍♂️

Some of our best players in recent years have cost very little compared to the likes of Britt, Fletcher, Braithwaite etc.

Friend, Leadbitter, Ayala, Dimi from the promotion team, even Nsue, Nugent etc.

Don’t need to spend millions.
Exactly smart business

Manning Free and got 10 assists this year.
Tuanzabe
Or
Jake cooper both a free
Ben Pearson loan replaces Mowatt

Ogbene replaces jones

Ramsay and archer back as IMO neither are ready for the prem just yet and would hope they have unfinished business here.

Add diallo on loan

If chuba was to leave maybe look at someone like illas Chair or chris willock

The guy's continuously funnelled money into the club when it's been safe from an FFP perspective to do so

I genuinely don't know how anyone could question his ambition

Some of his decisions regarding how he's used that ambition can be questioned, but his ambition is there for all to see IMO

If Gibson had the same wealth as the Newcastle owners and there was no ffp we'd be a top 6 Premier league club.

Now he/we are restricted by both, I think we'll have a go as much as we can next season but will have to rely on loans again.

Both Luton and Coventry have little money and have shown that in the. championship putting together a squad equipped to deal with a long season, fit and strong is much more important than soending big on a few individuals.

I think recent seasons have proven money is not everything anymore. Recruitment is.

Luton
Tom Lockyer has been a stand out player this season : ~£1m from Charlton.
Carlton Morris, 20+ goal a season striker - £2m from Barnsley.

Coventry
Gyökeres has scored 20+ 2 seasons in a row - £1.2m from Brighton.
Gustavo Hamer (who scored against us) has loads of assists - £1.5m from the Dutch league.

Sunderland found a few gems too, Trai Hume (500k from the Irish league), Aji Alese (500k from West Ham), etc...

Even Burnley - I know they spent big in the summer in comparison - but one of their best players this season, Anass Zaroury, 22 years old and only cost £4 million.

We've made the mistake too many times in the past signing big names for big money, Britt, Fletcher, Rhodes, etc... It doesn't work anymore.

I think most fans are on the same page this summer with transfer targets. For me the name of the game would be to get as much money as possible from fringe players and bring in players that can be better than what we currently have..

Luke Daniels - Loris Karius - Newcastle- Free

Anfernee Dijksteel - Joel Latibeaudiere - Swansea - Free
Paddy McNair - Alex Tuanzebe - Man Utd - Free
Grant Hall - Jan Paul Van Hecke - Brighton - Free
Marc Bola - Ryan Manning - Swansea - Free

Isaiah Jones - Reiss Nelson - Arsenal - Free
Martin Payero - Fisayo Dele-Bashiru - Sheff Wed - Free
Matt Crooks - Jose Cifuentes - LAFC - Free
Hayden Coulson - Ryan Kent - Rangers - Free

Stephen Walker - Chiedozie Ogbene - Rotherham - Free
Matthew Hoppe - Ross Stewart - Sunderland - Free

Owner - Execs - DOF - Manager - Coaches - Players - Fans.
All pretty well aligned it seems.
Very rare we see that.

The club is FFP comfortable and there is scope to invest in (rather than spend on) the squad.
I am confident Gibson wants promotion for financial and sporting reasons.
I hope the decisions around recruitment and retention are great. That is what will define next season - and our near future.
Get them right we will go up.
A vital summer ahead.

Boro has failed to become an established top tier side throughout Gibson's tenure and that isn't going to change. Reconcile yourselves to being a top half Div 2 team that occasionally spends a season or two in Div 1 before inevitable relegation. It helps ease the pain.

How many "established" PL sides would you say there are? 7 maybe?

Beyond them, only Southampton currently have had a longer stretch in the PL than we managed under SG.

It's a naïve to think a club of our size an ever become a perennial fixture like Liverpool or Spurs. For everyone else, enjoy the PL while you're in it.
