Some of you may remember I asked this very question a few days before Michael Carrick was appointed boss of our beloved Boro. A flair for appointing ‘rookies’ like Aitor Karanka and with a penchant towards Manchester United in Robson and McClaren, I hoped Steve Gibson would confirm the appointment of Carrick with his unflappable ice cool demeanour and Fergie-influenced phenomenal winning record.
Gibson acted decisively and Carrick did not disappoint. Despite falling at the final hurdle on Wednesday evening, we have relished one of the best seasons of delicious attacking football not witnessed for many a season. It has been a joy to look forward to and a pleasure to watch. Carrick has brought out the best in players who could previously have been described as average and he very nearly succeeded in pulling off ‘winning the war’ from a season that originally looked as if the best we could hope for was a ‘great escape’.
So, almost but not quite, Mr Gibson. There is no question as to ambition in choice of manager. Carrick turned a sow’s ear into a silk purse. We Boro fans want more. I quickly signed up to my Early Bird season ticket with the Premier League a distinct possibility. I sincerely hope Steve Gibson’s ambition matches ours and he fills the silk purse with sufficient funds to make promotion a serious probability next Season. I’m sure anything less would not match the ambition of Michael Carrick… or us Boro fans.
