High Blood Pressure

OK cheers Hap - looking forward to getting the medication now but awaiting a call from the Doc's for an appointment.
I didn't have a beer last weekend and I won't this weekend either, to try get it down a bit.

Hope it goes well for you. I’d be interested to know how you get on.

Get your blood sugar levels checked high bp and diabetes are bedfellows in many cases
One of my drivers for becoming vegan (have I mentioned that at all?) was that I really worried about developing diabetes. Not for any reason other than the vast amounts of chocolate/sweets I used to consume. Knocking gelatine and milk chocolate on the head has put a lot of those concerns to rest. I do have dark chocolate occasionally but I don't crave it in anywhere near the same way.

I'm having tests regarding my heart at the moment.
Despite been on tablets my was reading 180/120..
Chlorestol 8.5 also
Had a Angiogram and have a Echocardiogram Monday so hopefully sorted..
The Chest Pain Started when we went one nil up against Sunderland funny enough.
Thankfully not too many exciting moments since lol

Been a few threads on this and I think that's a good thing because it's really important to get it checked.

I had every test going. I'm fit for my age (43, my garmin reckons I'm in the top 25% fitness wise) and they couldn't find any underlying issue bar being slightly overweight. BP still high though. Sometimes it's just genetics.

If you know about you can do something about it. Even if it means taking a few pills.

If you don't that heart attack or stroke could be just around the corner......

Just a heads up for the men over 40 that you might want to take up the NHS offer of a free blood pressure check at your local pharmacy.

I consider myself a pretty fit 45 year old (played 5 a side last night, will do an 8 mile run tomorrow) but I've checked mine and it was a very high 162 over 101 😥.

So I will need a doctors appointment and medication.

Good job I checked and I can now try to get it down.
I'm sure it will come down with Meds mate

My worst readings were 210 over something like 120 (I forget exactly). They don’t like these big numbers, for good reason, and yours is very high too, but sometimes it is just a temporary spike, or bad reading.

Glad you’re getting checked out too. Try not to get too excited again - you’re probably right, it’s pretty unlikely 🤣

You're right about genetics, I was 29 years old and went in for a doctor's appt about my vision becoming blurry, turns out I was in hypertensive crisis and rushed to hospital.

Spent all day trying all kinds of meds to get it down, they even gave me an ultrasound on my kidneys to check for organ damage it was so ridiculously high.

They couldn't find anything wrong with me at all, otherwise completely healthy apart from my BP. My dad's been on meds since his mid 30's too, so I guess that's where I've got it from.

Been on medication ever since and I'm 36 now. Never been mega fit but 5 a side twice a week and gym 2/3 times, still a little overweight but the meds have probably saved me from an early demise.

The scary thing is I felt absolutely fine as well.

Go get checked, my readings at home are still averaging around 120/85 - 140/90 and the docs seem happy with how it's being managed.

Lower salt in food helps a lot, as does drinking decaf tea/coffee.

Go get checked out if you can find the time.

The silent killer. Mine was 264 over 148, heart attack territory.
Caught by surprise because I’d lost over 14kg, always exercising and eating carefully. It’s genetic ontop everything.

I’m certain it affects my temper, if I ever flip my lid first thing my wife says is “are you still taking them tablets” 😂😂

My Mrs uses that line too 😂😂

Sounds like you were in a similar position to me, very scary!

Some good advice on this thread for those of us at a certain age. It was a genuine shock to me the first time I had a high BP reading. Up until then it had been fine.

Thinking to that time I do reflect that I was definitely more stressed. Not sleeping well at times and probably too much salt in my diet. It all came to a head one day when I got a massive headache out of nowhere. Literally nothing one moment, then a headache the next.

I was in Leeds watching my son play for the district at the time. By the time the tournament finished I felt Ok but not great. By the time I went to the doctor a few days later, he said he would have sent me straight to hospital if I went to see him same day.

Thankfully nothing like that has happened again, but it must have been all linked to BP. I like to keep an eye on it from time to time now.

It sounds obvious but alcohol consumption isn’t great for it. Not sleep at least 7 hours regular not great either. Our body needs that amount and consistently less with impact all sorts.

Another one here who had a random check and was high (181/96).

Stress, self medicating with the red stuff and a hideously high consumption of salt were behind it I think.

I'm 61 with a VO2 max of 45 (higher when fully fit). So it was a rude awakening. My Grandfather and his mother both died from High BP related causes.
Drastically cut down the booze. Got my weight doan. Sorted out the stress levels and, crucially, cut the salt intake right down.

Now seems to be around 124/85 on average. So I worry a bit less about that now.

I’m on Ramipril and have been for about 5 years due to a high BP. Bought an arm cuff monitor and like others it was always a higher reading at the docs. Dr said that White Coat Syndrome was actually rare and decided on the 24 hours monitor. Apart from the thing going off on the tube, which scared those sitting near me, my BP was matching my home monitors reading, not those at the surgery. Dr actually said, “you really do have White Coat Syndrome”. 🧐

I had a random test last week when I saw doc about something else, was 174/116 - I was in shock, I don’t drink don’t smoke eat relatively well but overweight. Very stressful job but work say “it’s part of the job”. Waiting for follow up as BP at home has swung between 128/96 to 160/115 so need those meds.

Any recommendations on what meds? I don’t want to feel spooky (if you get what I mean!)

Had blood pressure problems for 10 years had various medication and side effects with the tablets
I ended up with Ramipril sorted my diet out and slowed the drinking down. My blood pressure was 195/120 as I entered the Ambulance with the first of my 3 heart attacks
