The biggest rivalry in football is Celtic V Rangers.
The two most successful teams in a country.
The two biggest teams in the biggest city.
Two opposing 'religious' back grounds.
Different national allegiances.
Monarchy v Theocracy
Establishment v Anti Establishment. Etc, etc

The only reason the importance of that rivalry is obscured for a lot of English people is due to a parochial attitude to anything Scottish or Irish.

Yes you get just as passionate rivalries in many countries, but this has deeper roots.
