Government eco+ scheme for insulation etc

Looks like another round of insulation for homes announced

However fitting with the current scheme of support, if you are not in council tax band A-D you get nothing as you're rich and can afford this yourself despite everyone struggling

"General Eligibility Group
To ensure ECO+ will support as many people struggling to pay their bills as possible during the immediate cost-of-living crisis, ECO+ will support a wider pool of households through a general eligibility group. We propose the group will cover all homes in Council Tax bands A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and A-C in Wales, with an EPC of D and below. We propose using the Council Tax band proxy as a simple, easy-to-administer way of targeting homes that are likely to be in need while aiming to exclude those on the highest incomes. Households in this group are those who are considered more likely to be at risk from struggling to pay their energy"

Great for those who get it but almost everyone is struggling so this seems a poor scheme imo

The moaning Scot’s always get preferential treatment. 🤣

What’s the typical value of a band E property these days up north ?

Mines C thankfully not entirely sure why but probably should be a D. Most of the street is D a handful are C, all are the same style house and I’ve got the most land so it’s very strange. Not that I’m complaining.

Don't know about typical but my mate got the £150 D band rebate in his house in Thornaby which is a 8 year old 4 bed new build and he has just sold for £196k. Our house in Ingleby we paid £210k for and we are E so got nothing. His new house in Ingleby was £320k and also band E. our neighbours 4 bed is also band D even though it's extended to be equal or larger to our house. It's a flawed system imo so imagine there are a lot of detached houses in the area that will miss out on it, while neighbours are eligible.

There is a consultation to provide feedback on the scheme but it doesn't open u til tomorrow and to give feedback on that one element need to answer 80 questions so almost designed to put people off 😂

People struggling to eat tend not to live in 4 bed detached houses.

Its taken a long time to fet this insulation scheme running - it should have happened at the beginning of 2022 at least.

Insulation is a complete no brainer for me, it reduces energy usage and bills, it reduces carbon emissions, it saves having to build more energy capacity, it creates jobs in the UK. It doesn't need billions of spending up front to bring benefits.

One concerne can be foam wall insulation in houses that really were not designed for it, they can sweat.

I'm band E and on a pension. The people out of the back of me are band D and are not struggling to eat, and if they are, they can sell one of the two or three cars they all have parked up outside the house and use the money from that, and save the planet while they are at it.

Of course they do?! Everyone's income is squeezed and council tax valuation bands are wildly out of date. Just because you're in a 4 bed detached doesn't mean you are called Tarquin and have a trust fund.

The assumption that people in band E do not need support with this is very flawed. Some will not, but in just the same way that some in band D and below won't.

I live in a band E in Northumberland and probably don't need this support. My next door neighbours property is band D. They are both Police inspectors. They probably don't need this support either.

Ridiculous way to try and target support.
I wonder how it could be targeted though without it being means tested and costing more to administer than it pays out?

Our 4 bed detached in IB is in band D i know some of the neighbours are in band E. The only reason i can think ours is D is the 4th bedroom is a box room. When people go through planning to add extensions is re-evaluation of banding not done as a matter of course. We are certainly not in the low income bracket but i will take any freebies available.

Yes they were right to say something had to be done. I can understand motorists getting upset when the protestors glued themselves to the road but it raised the profile of the issue. Who remembers most marchers. In locked down there was a 7 mile march through London that the media ignored, because they did not support the anti-vaccers. I am not a anti btw but I thought he was wrong to ignore the March, in effect censoring upto 10% of the UK population.

Ref Council Tax - there will be some oddities, but in general the 4 bed detached group live in above average value houses, the vast majority can afford, say £150 for loft insulation.

There was story on my local TV last week about a man who has cardboarded the inside of his social housing property. I believe he has been waiting over 5 years for his social housing landlord (Platform Housing to do it). He saved him an unbelievable £300 a month on his energy bills.

Wasted opportunity this. It shouldn't matter what band you are in - what should matter is if you need insulation and if that need would reduce the UK's energy consumption.

This could be a whole new public green industry with surveyors, fitters, manufacturers, apprenticeships etc etc - We could insulate the UK and be one of the best in Europe. We could slash our energy costs and reliance.

This will be just another half hearted effort.

Loft insulation isn't £150 it's about £600 for up to spec. Cavity wall is about £2k+. You can't even buy the insulation yourself to diy it for £200

Our council did them all didn't they. I own my own home but I remember them doing the insulation free of charge in about 2005 then again in around 2015. It's about 2ft thick up there.

Apologies - it was £150 when I had it done, but it was about 12 years ago - sounds like in energy there is a big inflation going on.

(150mm and we don't have a big house)

Is cavity insultion being offered free?
