Garry Monk defends managerial record

“I went to Middlesbrough and lasted five months. They wanted to change their whole approach and even though we were 2/3 points off the play offs with half a season to play and I have to question that decision."

You have to wonder why he's been out of work so long if he's so good.

Delusion and over inflated view of his own ability.

Never mind 3 points off the play offs, more relevant is the fact that we were 12 points off second place and 19 points off the top in a season Gibson was *wanting* to smash the league.
3 points off 6th place wasn't good enough at the halfway point. Even without considering any dodgy dealings.

What he said was broadly true but neglected to mention his ropey dealings. It was below par and he did seem a bit muddled in his thinking and selections but he did seem to be slowly getting there. His remit was to totally change the way we played football. He didn't get sacked for results or football he got sacked for dodgy dealings and rubbing Steve Gibson up the wrong

Wasn't it a choice between him and Pearson - I remember being very excited when Monk got the job based on his record with Swansea and the football they played.

How this bloke was ever employed is beyond words
It's baffling isn't it. Multi million pound industry. You'd think they'd have a database of every manager in the world, points per pounds spent in wages, a full assesment of all the transfers they've made.
What we get is "there's that bloke from Swansea who did ok in the premier league for 8 months and has an undeserved reputation for playing attractive football. His former employers say they banned his agent from the club, but I'm sure there's nothing behind that and there's no need to speak to them".

Did he play broadly the same team or even formation twice in a row ever?

He seemed to choose his teams and formations at random. I don't think the players ever knew what the plan was or their role in it.

Exactly. He'll never have a better opportunity to have a successful season than he had that summer and he couldn't do it.

I liked the system he went with early doors; 433 with 3 strikers, Clayton dropping in between the 2 centre halves when we had the ball so it essentially became a 343.

I'd found it bizarre that he'd signed Braithwaite and Britt at the time, when we already had Bamford but could see logic in it because of the 433 system. It gave me confidence that he knew what he was doing and had a plan.

I think Braithwaite picking up that injury on the opening day probably did derail his early plans. He stuck with 433 for the first 4 games if I remember rightly, with Gestede replacing Braithwaite but then changed it after a defeat away at Forest, and seemed to pretty much make it up as he went along from there.

His selection v Preston North end was legendary. "Right lads 442 today. Have we got any wingers. Oi you Spanish bloke do you know if we've got any wingers at the club, someone who dribbles better than Messi that sort of thing? Actually not to worry I'll just play a fullback and a central midfielder there."

That was embarrassing to watch. I remember sitting there for most of the match trying to work out if it was 442 with Baker and Fabio playing as wingers, or 532 with Christie and Fabio playing as wing-backs.

The players probably didn't know themselves.

2 points off the play-offs as something to be proud of?

He seems to be confusing the circumstances he was working under with pretty much every manager we've had since. It's maybe a legitimate complaint if you've had next to nothing to spend. It's not if you've inherited the core of a promotion winning side and been given circa £50m to add to it.

God imagine going through pandemic with him. At least warnock was entertaining and outgponh in front of the media...and most important connected with the fans

Wanted to change the whole approach..... because we were playing terrible football. The final straw for me was that god awful Millwall away performance.

The man's an absolute bell! And he has a smug look all of the time that you'd love to slap from his face.

The infuriating thing about Monk is that he was given it on a plate.

£50m to spend but we didn't actually need to spend much in order to assemble a team that would be capable of promotion. We still had the spine of the promotion winning team.....Ayala/Gibson....Clayton/Leadbitter, so he just needed to build around that. 4231 with Traore and Downing either side of Bamford, and then spend big on a quality no 10 to replace Ramirez. It wasn't rocket science.
