Gareth Southgate

Which is I’ve said it. Folks can disagree.. I’ve seen a few podcasts with folks still pouring over ‘the golden generation’ - I think this group of players bring much more to the table.

We’re a bit more sensible about things now and not so rabidly over confident.. fuelled by the tabloids and their prayer mats and all that stuff.

I think the womens team have done well to kill the Baddiel and Skinner song too!
I haven't heard that song at all since the world cup started which is such a blessing

It’s had it’s day 1996 to 2022 - 26 years, that’s more than enough.. we couldn’t have 30 years of hurt solely of that song being out. 60 years of hurt? Time’s a healer.. it’s never gonna hurt that much.

But it wasn’t a squad though that was the point it was a group of cliques of a bunch of over hyped, privileged prima Donnas that thought they were doing us all a favour by turning up to play for England.

Listen even now to rio and Gary Neville talk about how they didn’t like playing and being in camp. It was toxic and new comers like downing had no chance.
Kyle Walker talks about that to Rob & Romesh on their 3 lions show. He was one of the young lads new to the squad in 2011.

I Remember watching downing playing for England ( and it could just be me) but it looked very much like the Chelsea players were passing too each other ( Ashley Cole lampard terry etc) and not downing.

Even watching on tv you could tell It was very cliquey.

Yeah, that was embarrassing.

2006 in particular we had one of the top 2 or 3 squads there: Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney
Svens management of that squad in 2006 was really poor.

He took 4 strikers....Rooney who was crocked, Owen who was a crock, Crouch and 17 year old Walcott.

Owen ended up crocked after the 3rd group game and he then played crocked Rooney as a lone striker for the knockout games.

Rooney and Owen should have gone to the tournament but not as starters. Crouch and Defoe should have started up front, and he should have had Rooney and Owen as options to bring off the bench if we needed a goal.
