Game management

Watching Brighton manage to turn a 4-on-1 in the last minute to conceding an equaliser reminded me of this.

Against Sheff Utd at 1-0, there was no collapsing to the floor when Dieng collected it, no cramps, no 'injuries' to break up play, no taking it in the corner. When we had a corner in the 89th minute we attacked it as usual. Other teams would have been time wasting all over the place.
Similarly at Watford, we were pushing for a 2nd at 1-0 and didn't try and break it up when the game turned.

Do we need to do more of this? Or are we too prinicipled.

Ayling apart we are seriously lacking sh*thouse mentality.

Jones gets away with it sometimes, other times it looks ridiculous.

Too much of it in the game.

If you applaud it when we do it, you have to accept it when others do it to us.

I'd rather get rid of it, but being principled does put you at a competitive disadvantage.

I do think there's a few ways the rules could change to minimise it. Going back to 3 subs would be a start. One day maybe a ref actually will show a keeper a second yellow for time wasting.

Only problem with that is it will probably to a Boro player and as many have said we don't do it.

I was quite surprised we attacked the late corner against Sheffield United like we were losing. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Carrick and the coaches mention that.

We did stop playing out from the back though. Carrick was gesturing to Dieng to knock it long so that is a bit of game management.

Problem is every other team does it.

Yeah, and I complain about them doing it all the time, so it would be hypocritical of me to push them to do it themselves.

I'm obviously relieved when we do run down the clock in the lead, but I really don't like the concept of feigning injuries.

We were so good at holding onto leads under the gaffer. I remember Leadbitter speaking about his intensity and how demanding he was of the team.

Sometimes I worry that Carrick's laid-back nature is reflected in his team. When the going gets tough we crumble.

I agree. We are far too nice. Under a more Wiley manager Sainz wouldn't have been on the pitch to score the second. Someone would have done him before he had the chance.

This is where we miss having a Leadbitter or a Clayton in the side. I like Morris but he is young and inexperienced and was poor in the lead up to their 2nd goal.

It's more than that for me. It's our entire set up. I'm not sure we have a plan for that scenario at half time today.

The middle ground between Carrick and Aitor probably sees us walk this league but far more easily said than done!

All teams would need to manage games / see games out, dark arts is what I think they call it these days but we just don’t have it in us to do that.

Yep, for me (I would have to watch the game back again) second half I was screaming at the TV, "you don't need to do that" forcing passes in tight areas and losing the ball with half our midfield beyond the ball..Hackney and Morris both guilty. They could have recycled the ball for a further 5 minutes and had Norwich chasing the ball and then go back to Dieng, but instead they kept committing players forward when they didn't need too, and I wasn't happy how tight and aggressive the players were out of possession second half.

Sorry to be negative because we were brilliant first half...but you have to be so much smarter and solid away from home when you are in front to get out of this league.

I think as good as morris has been since joining us he seems to run out of steam by about 65 - 70 minutes he made some awful tired lunging tackles today. Time for howson to come in for him later in matches until he gets to the fitness levels required to last a full 90.
