Football Manager 2024

Struggling in my first season in the PL now, anyone got any tips on how to tweak tactics to cope with better teams?
When you are underdogs set your mentality to balanced. If both teams are even go positive, and if you are favourites go attacking.

I'm 8th in my first Premier League season in mid January. Got to the semi finals of the Carabao Cup, with the 2nd leg due imminently. Drew the first leg 2-2 at Anfield, but was 2-0 up with 20 to play.

I've won at Old Trafford, drew at Stamford Bridge, and beaten both Spurs and Chelsea at home. Got beat 5-1 at Arsenal and 4-0 at City mind.

I went with balanced mentality in pretty much all my games in my first season in the prem.

In tough away games I moved my 2 centre mids back to defensive mid

I haven't been on in a week or so because I've been poorly but I'm getting the itch again now I'm getting better.
I've got 2 saves, my Boro save and my Reading save but I'm unsure if I want to go back to do either of them! Although I'm already having a lot of success on the game I feel like a want something more fun.
Anyone got any suggestions for a team?
I always enjoy a save with our Danish brothers, Middlefart. They are in the 2nd division (equivalent to league 1), try and get them up the leagues and dominate Denmark and go far in Europe.

I've always enjoyed the Ultimate Challenge. Start unemployed with zero badges/lowest rep and try to win 10 domestic league titles, 10 domestic cup titles, 5 champions leagues and all international tournaments, plus Club World Cup. Around 32 comps in total, think I've managed 10-11 before. Usually start in Sweden where you can progress quite quickly through the divisions (and crucially are offered jobs off the bat) before moving into the top European leagues.

As for my Boro save, finished 9th second season in EPL (down from 7th in first season) BUT qualified for the Europa by winning the Conference League. Sociedad and Atlanta gave us some issues in the QF/SF but battered LASK 8-0 in the final at Hampden

Took a few weeks away from the game whilst myself and my family battled with the lurgie and decided to restart my Boro save and see if I could feel a bit happier.

First season I finished top of the championship scoring a bag full of goals In the process, Kieran Scott reccomended a young loan striker called Nelson Wieper and I snapped him up for the season + £3.2millon obligation to buy literally hoping I go up and I did! Another fantastic loan signing was Orel Mangala who displaced Hackney in my advanced playmaker role and he thrived in the big games, upon promotion I signed him permanently for £3million. I also triggered Greenwoods £1.5million option. Latte Lath got 20 goals, he thrives as an advanced forward with a pressing forward partner.

Second season was the case of just survive, made some signings the most important 2 of note were Savio from Troyes for £27million and Brajan Gruda from Koln for £7.5million. I managed to survive pretty comfortably in 11th in the end.

It allowed me to significantly improve heading into season 3, Marcos Leonardo in to partner Weiper, Competition brought in all over the pitch with only a few of the promotion squad still in tact.
Currently I'm in February and have just won the carabao cup final beating Chelsea 3-2, Weiper and Mangala scoring which was poetic in my eyes. I currently sit 8th in the league with a tight league and I know if I can just put a run together I could potentially get Europa League instead of conference.
A center back and a keeper on the agenda in the summer on top of fleshing out the squad with more quality.

2 dissapointing things, RVDB hasn't developed much and has became only a squad player after 2 and a half seasons of persistence and Saudis haven't come and spent insane money on my average players 😂

Did sell Matt Clarke and Barlaser for a combined £20million to Sheffield united though 😂

I have started it on the PS5, as it was free on the ps+ pass.
Just had a knee replacement so this is going to be my entertainment for the next 6 weeks.

Never played this iteration of the game before but I was obsessed with CM01/02 back in the day.

It's going to be a steep learning curve. I would recommend watching some tactics videos on YouTube.
Here are some FM YouTube creators who are worth watching
Hood gaming, Stinger and RDF.
I would keep tactics quite simple something along the lines of
4231 with team intensity on attack.
Sweeper keeper defend
Wingback attack(both side)
BPD defend
DM support x 2
IF support(both sides)
AMC attack
Advanced forward attack.
Team instructions.
Focus play down left and right
Pass into space
Higher tempo
Shorter passing
Run at defence.

Counter
Counter press
Roll out ball

Trigger press much more often
Prevent keeper distribution
High press
Higher defence line.

Individual instructions depend on the skills of players playing.
But I would have wing back crossing from byline and running wide with ball.
The inside forwards sitting narrow and cutting inside.

The two BPD dribble more.
And all players tackle harder.

That should give you a good starting point and using pretty much the meta tactic for FM24

**If you do get stuck or need any help on it, feel free to private message me on here and I will try help. I have 10,000+ hours on Football manager on Steam since FM13 and about 500 hours on FM24 on my xbox also many more hours on older versions and Championship manager.

You are, in fact, a legend! Thanks for that.

Yea I've already been watching YT videos on it. It does look daunting like.
I have made a start and assigned lots of roles to my coaching team until I get used to things.
I've progressed in to game week 3 after about 6 hours.... 😆
I don't mind the pace of the game though, I suppose you can do either depending upon how much you want back from it.
I have 6 weeks of time on my hands. 👐

Mrs is away so there's my weekend sorted!

I always get bored round May and then don't play until the new on comes out in November (drifitng back to some classic 93/94 or 97/98) However, these updated squads, coupled with our excellent window have lured me back in early!

With training my advice would be initially let the coaches do general training but you be in charge of individual training and get players training for the specific role you want them to play(and extra training on any weaknesses on the specific role). You can also use the individual training option to train a player in a new position if the players attributes better suit it.
Another hint is physical attributes are very important especially acceleration, pace, stamina and natural fitness and I like to have players with a positive personality and high determination (normally minimum 14 determination for me). I would also say don't rotate for the sake of rotating(you want to players to get the green lines between them) but don't go into a match with a player who isn't fully match fit and below maximum sharpness, over the Christmas period I normally have the starting 11 and subs doing no training as they will keep the match fitness and stamina with the amount of games but lowers the risk of injury or fatigue.

You can get the old databases if you wanted to play that. I'm playing the 98/99 one now with Boro.

So using the updated database took us up as champions on 101 pts with no signings until January, where I signed Chuba on an expensive loan deal, just because!!!

Interestingly Neto Borges is excellent on it, as is Tommy Conway, lets hope the FM scouts are proven to be right in this case!

Does that update also update the promotions/relegations?

I played for the first time in months the other day but just went on holiday for the first season but it's just not the same!
