Finley Cartwright

History tells us alot of players (especially boro ones) hyped up at a young age and snapped up by big clubs often dissapear into obscurity.

I think he’s nailed on to get some game time if we’re trying to convince him he’ll progress more quickly here than at Chelsea.
I hope he gets nowhere near the pitch for the next 6 months. Less chance of him getting poached. If he plays against Bolton and has a blinder it won’t just be Chelsea sniffing round.

He is very slight of build although he is quite tall. Coburn was similar when he first appeared although he has filled out a bit more, and I think Carrick was similar when he was a young player. Right now, I think the physicality of the Championship could be a big ask.

He loves the club, which is a big plus, if he progresses, then he will have loads of time to further his career.
I'm sure the club will look after him, and hopefully he improves and eventually plays for his boyhood club.

100 % agree with this,he definitely would benefit from filling out over the next 2 years

This is what I don’t get about Han-Noah Massengo..

Bristol bought him for £2.7m.. potentially rising to £8m they put him straight into the championship

Then they got bored and sent him out on loan.. he wasn’t part of their youth academy.. he signed from an adult team after making first team appearances. Now if he joins an English club compensation is due to Bristol City? (apparently above the £260k that would be paid if he went to a European team)

He’s 22 years old

That's modern football fan thinking. Don't play footballers or others will see how good they are, also there's no chance of them getting injured. Win/win while the team doesn't.

You say that but if he thinks we’re stifling his progress to keep the big clubs away, he will be off to play for a bigger club’s reserves instead. We only have to look at Nathan Wood to see what happens when someone is given a debut at 16 and then barely plays any minutes.

Yeah, fair point. I think personally we handled the Wood situation badly. Should have given him more opportunities. Unless of course he just wasn’t good enough at the time…🤷🏽‍♀️

Cartwright sounds like a real prospect (apparently, I’ve never seen him play). I don’t think we’ll stifle him. If he’s that good, we should be sitting down with him and his family (and agent) right now and talking about a decent long term contract as soon as he’s 17. Get everyone involved thinking “Boro” so it’s a lot harder for anyone to tempt him away. Hopefully that’s already happening - if not it should be.

I’m just worried that the more exposure he gets before we can tie him down, the more big clubs will come in with offers.

He's 16, loads of time to develop at Boro .......and if he's really good enough in a couple of years the big clubs will come sniffing and not a great deal we can do.

Chelsea have wasted/ruined the careers of dozens of very good teenagers - give them a big money deal, they've made it at 18. Loan after loan after loan during their 5 yr deal.......then quietly released to play for MK Dons etc.

Then the next batch. And repeat.

Really hope for his sake he's got a good sensible family behind him, see the big picture not just chase the perceived glory and £££££.

Thing is though, failing and ending up at a club like MK Dons is better than the careers of most "very good prospects" at most clubs. Most players at Chelsea's academy usually end up playing professional football at a good level. Most players at other academy's end up at Northern League level or dropping out of the game altogether.

I'd be very interested to see the % of players at Chelsea's academy who go on to have good pro careers. Bet there's loads highly rated at 16 who are bombed out 18-21 yr old who just drift out of the game.
