Finding Jack Charlton.

I have it on DVD and haven't been able to drag myself to watch it. I know I will need a box of hankies to see me through it. 😪

I loved big Jack. My absolute hero. He’d always ruffle my hair and call me Bonny lad whenever we saw him out and about
Coming from Ashington, as Big Jack did, when we were young all the older folk would call us Bonny lad or hinny, a very Northern thing and possibly even a very Northumbrian / Ashington thing.

I’ll be watching this too but like others think there’ll be very mixed emotions. There is of course the Boro link, but for me personally there’s also the Ashington link. The man was an absolute giant for this town and almost worshipped by everyone here.

I think there’s an ASDA on the site of the pitches where he and his ‘kid’ used to play?

There’s a newish Asda store that’s been built on Portland Park which was the ground of Ashington AFC until a few years ago.

Played there myself a couple of times and as you can probably guess from my avatar, Ashington AFC are my other footballing love along with Boro

A lovely portrayal of his time as Ireland manager. He's loved over there. When I first worked in Cork and landed at the airport I saw what respect they had for the fella. There was a pond built in the concourse of the old airport and on the side of it was a bronze statue of the man with his rod and fishing basket. His statue now sits in the new airport, I've got a photo somewhere of me sat next to it, he's wearing my Boro scarf in it.

A very affectionate film. I won’t spoil it but the closing shot in the garden was so poignant and I had to shed a little tear.

Interesting to speculate how England would have got on with Jack as manager but he and Cloughie weren’t yes men like Greenwood and others so they never had a hope of getting the job.

Managers like Jack, Shankly, Paisley, Cloughie, the Doc, Malcolm Allison, Joe Mercer, Ferguson - we will never see their like again. I’m grateful I have lived through that golden era of quality managers with huge personalities.

Really enjoyed that, moving but very interesting. The shots of him and his familly on the beach and in the pub are in a Northumberland town called Cambios (pronounced cammes) his son has the pub there called The Charltons, nice spot.

Met him a few times when I was younger, nice guy.

Met him at a sportsman’s dinner. Shook his hand. Was a skinny 19 yr old at the time. Was struck by what a big imposing powerful bloke he was. As I said though I want particularly well nourished back then.

There is a decent bit about the Boro, usual footage of him on the pitch collecting tracksuits, him and Bobby talking outside the office after a pitch inspection, training on the moors, and mucking about with the players in the changing rooms.
Loved the bit after the Ayresome pitch inspection in the snow, him and Bobby are stood by his car and he pops the boot open and gives him a pheasant and a rabbit.

Fantastic documentary and very poignant at the end. What a character. Loved the way he dealt with the young lad who was a bit tongue tied interviewing him. Says a lot about the man and also the little insights into how he valued the kitman for the Republic of Ireland and made him feel important, included and an integral part of the team. Some of the narrative was taken from Sue Lawlie interviewing him for Desert Island Discs and it’s a programme certainly worth seeking out and having a listen to. Available on the Radio 4 Desert Island Discs archive. More revealing and interesting stuff about his relationship with Bobby.

Agreeing the Boro v Preston game can't go ahead due to the awful weather conditions, frozen pitch etc
We won the arranged game 3-0 a week later

It showed Jack shouting at the players to run up Roseberry Topping faster?

Mrs Wurzel laughed when it showed a quick shot of his penis as he came out of the showers at Ayresome Park.

Showed nothing of him at Sheff Wed or Newcastle - Newcastle was probably his low point.

Very good documentary of him with Ireland.

I was not expecting it to be that moving. What a great documentary, nod to his Boro days, quick flash of Bernie and Kernaghan. The memories of 1990 it bought up. Excellent tv
