EURO 2024

I'm definitely in the pro Southgate camp, but I'm really scratching my head why there isn't a single fit Left Back in a squad of 33 players?

Maybe Shaw is nearer to fitness than we think..
Hope so!

I wonder if Gareth might consider a bit of copy and paste from Pep/City and set up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Stones stepping into midfield alongside Rice when we have the ball and the full backs playing a bit more narrow (i.e. 3-2-4-1 in possession). I'm not convinced he will, but it could help solve the problem of no left footed left back/a centre back playing LB.

Would suit us i think, considering Walker is the RB and he doesn't bomb forward much anymore and the Left back is likely to be Gomez or Trippier

Looking at the squad our left back options are the main concern. Shaw is knackered and surely isn’t match fit. Trippier has had a terrible season. Surprised he hasn’t gone with Tyrick Mitchell OR even Lewis Hall. Appreciate he’s not played much.

I don’t see Maddison and Toney getting in the main squad. Both have had bad seasons and out of form.

Southgate seems reluctant to go to Italy and watch Tomori and Loftus-Cheek. Both have had brilliant seasons.

I agree with some of the comments. The lack of options/cover at LB if Shaw doesn't make it, is a little worrying.

Shaw is a huge jigsaw piece in this puzzle too.

If Shaw is fit, it allows us to play Foden LW, as we all know Shaw would hold the width, allowing Foden to drift inside where he's at his best - similar to his position v Belgium in last England match.

This would also allow us to play a more defensive minded CM (TAA/Wharton/Gallagher etc) alongside Rice, to allow Jude be more 'free' - where he is best.

If Shaw doesn't make it, then it would likely be Trippier at LB and he won't hold the width at the same level Shaw would, so we would need to tweak the team and I think the tweak would need to be - dropping Jude to play alongside Rice. Foden behind Kane, and then bringing Gordon at LW to hold the width - allowing Foden space for him to do his magic.

Can’t disagree with any of that really.

I agree, Trippier and Foden on the left wouldn’t feel right.

It’s a great option no doubt. But anyone who seriously thinks Foden shouldn’t be starting shouldn’t be and won’t be taken seriously.
I agree we start Foden, win the first two games and rest him for Palmer in the third. bring him back for knockouts and use palmer late on as a sub when foden is knackered

As others have already said, I feel Southgate is taking a huge risk selecting Shaw as the only natural LB in the squad - he wasn't even deemed fit enough to make the Utd bench for their last game of the season. I'd have been against him selecting Shaw as the only LB even if he was fit, so it seems even crazier when you consider he's currently unfit.

Even if Shaw is able to get back to full fitness in time to play, there's still always a good chance he could pick up an injury during the tournament. I can see us ending up with either Trippier or Gomez filling in at LB.

I also feel Solanke can feel a little hard done by not to be selected. He's had a cracking season and Toney has been out of form, although I do rate him, so I can understand why Southgate has selected him.
