EURO 2024

Ok, now that the Championship season is done, let's look forward to this summer's Euros in Germany...

Who would be your first choice 11 to bring it home? I can't see many beating this team:

Kane
Foden Bellingham Saka
Mainoo Rice
*Chilwell Maguire Stones Walker
Pickford

*Would swap for Shaw if fit

We are definitely weakest in defensive, but our attacking options are frightening.

I think we will win the tournament.

I think its madness not to have Palmer in the starting XI given the season he's had. But that means you'd have to move Bellingham into midfield alongside Rice. Tricky decisions ahead for Gareth that's for sure. Left back is a mess. Shaw might not be fit but I wouldn't have Chilwell anywhere near it. He's looked dreadful since he's come back from injury. Which leaves Trippier as an option at LB which would be much more preferable for me. Rest of the team picks itself really. Will be interesting to see if Henderson is invited along to do card tricks and whack his finger off the side of his head...

Wharton should be Rice’s partner in midfield.

The front 4 picks itself.

Then Rice/Wharton in midfield…but it’ll very likely be Mainoo or Gallagher.

Mainoo has been very poor of late though.

Back 4 will be usual 3 (Maguire, Stones, Walker - not that I’d start Maguire because he’s so poor). Then Shaw at LB if fit. If not, then Trippier will deputise.

Pickford in goal.

The only positions up for grabs are CM alongside Rice and LB.

Palmer has been great this season - but there is no way he should be displacing either of Foden or Saka. He’s nowhere near their level as yet.

I'd personally be tempted to go with Tyrick Mitchell at LB but he may be one of these players who's solid at club level but not quite good enough to make the step up to play international level.

I'd go with Bellingham and Rice in midfield, Foden as a 10, and then either Gordon or Grealish on the left.

I'd build my team around Foden in the 10 slot. I get the feeling Southgate is going to accommodate Bellingham and move Foden to a position where he's no where near as effective as he should be. As it stands i hae no idea how Southgate is going to line up. I think there are quite a few questions to answer to be honest.

Pickford
Walker Stones centre half? left back?
Rice Bellingham
Saka Foden attacking mid left
Kane

They're both outstanding playing as 10's but you have to move the player who is more comfortable playing in a different position.

I'd say Bellingham is more comfortable playing in midfield than Foden is playing wide left - he started off playing in midfield and built his reputation whilst playing in that position.

The CB's and LB are the problem positions and will be the reason if we don't win it.
France have some astounding strength and depth, would make them favourites

If the Times is to be believed, Southgate is going to name a large number of defenders in the squad, which I think is very sensible given how many have question marks over their fitness.

I'm sure the usual suspects will hammer him for it though.

agree, very sensible. Think it shows there is also a lack of belief of those defensive players, as well as question marks over fitness

With a 26 man squad you can name 2 players for every position and a 3rd goalkeeper, leaving 3 additional spaces to be filled. Personally I would take Toney and Watkins just in case Kane gets injured, but I would have no problem adding 2 more defenders for three reasons. Firstly, that's the area you are most likely to have players suspended. Secondly, there are fitness concerns regarding some of the defensive options. Thirdly, it is unlikely that we will use more than 6 players in the 3 attacking players behind Kane (Saka, Foden, Bellingham, Palmer, Grealish and Gordon would be my 6).

I wonder if Southgate will get hammered if he picks Eric Dier. I've never been a huge fan, but apparently he has performed well for Bayern Munich this season including in the Champions League, and he offers experience and versatility.

It's a 30 man squad he's naming today.

They don't need to finalise the 26 man squad until June.

So I think there'll be a few more defenders than will make the final squad.
