England Penalty

All the pundits saying it wasn't a penalty. If it had happened anywhere else on the pitch it would have a been a foul. Essentially, it was a late challenge where the defender instead of playing the ball, played the man. It is almost as if some pundits think that the criteria for a foul is different in the penalty area.

If it had been the defender's head that Kane kicked, no pen. I don't like it and I think without VAR it isn't given but those are the rules and VAR did what VAR does.

Hey ho

It’s only a penalty if you illegally prevent a player from scoring. Kane had already got his shot off before contact was made so no pen. Plus slow motion shows Kane kicked defender.

If Kane’s shot had gone in would you have disallowed it?

That's not true in the slightest

"A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip
If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick.
  • Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed
  • Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned
  • Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off"
There's absolutely zero mention of preventing a player from scoring in the laws.

Apparently this is the rule that ends the argument..

According to the rules regarding playing in a dangerous manner, players can be penalised for "any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player himself)"

UEFA states: "It is committed with an opponent nearby and prevents the opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury.

"Playing in a dangerous manner involves no physical contact between the players. If there is physical contact, the action becomes an offence punishable with a direct free kick or penalty kick.

"In the case of physical contact, the referee should carefully consider the high probability that misconduct has also been committed."

Yeah, the thing is you’ve just made that up. There is nothing in the laws that says a foul is judged differently in a scoring incident, even less that it’s only a penalty if you prevent a player from scoring. A penalty is properly given for any direct free kick offense committed inside the box. If you come in late like that and catch the man after the ball has gone in any other situation anywhere else on the pitch it’s a foul. Where is your basis for saying it’s not that in the penalty area unless you prevent a goal?

If Kane’s shot had gone in would you have disallowed it?

Obviously not, because whether Kane was fouled or not, you don’t disallow a goal when a player is fouled and scores anyway. That’s a total red herring.

These types of decisions never get given generally. It’s been a source of annoyance of mine and a few of my mates for years.

Anywhere else on the pitch, it’s a late tackle and usually a guaranteed yellow. Because it’s in the box it’s like the defender is immune from punishment. The “balls gone” argument is also rubbish. Nowhere across the entire pitch do people say it, only in the penalty area.

You can still try to block the ball without fouling a player after the ball has been struck.

As soon as I seen it tonight, I said it should be a penalty but they never get given. Can’t believe it got awarded but I was glad it did.

Gary Neville literally said this, “there’s a higher bar inside the box” or something. Which is completely wrong.
