England Germany tonight

It will be interesting to see how Germany have improved ( I know they lost to Hungary) as well since the euros.

As Nothing motivates der nationalmanschaft like a World Cup

Neither have looked very good since the euros. I suspect they will both look a damn sight better in Qatar.

0-0 for me or a1-0 either way and a bit of Moaning on here

I'm a Southgate supporter, but it is a pressure game for sure. We've had a poor 6 months at international level. He has to resolve a few issues for this game.

Firstly we're looking brittle in defence, CB options are out of form backups have limited international experience, but he might have to go with them.

Second CM, we have poor options in this role, full stop. He has to find a solution and a balance, that allows us to start to dictate possession again, and be tight out of possession.

Up top, the wide players are not delivering, we have good options, but again none of them are experienced international player except for Sterling. At CF no one has put pressure on Kane for his role, we need that pressure. e need someone to come on as a sub and play an absolute blinder.

There has been a lot of guff said about this being a great england squad during the last 2 years, it isn't. It has clear gaps, and a lack of experience, there is individual ability, but that doesn't always translate to a good player or a good team at this level.

We're playing Germany lets just compare man for man against the team that beat Germany away 5-1.

Seaman or Pope --- Seaman by a country mile
Neville or James --- even, Neville more solid, James better going forward
Ashley Cole or Saka -- Ashley Cole by a mile, one of our best fullbacks ever
Ferdinand or Walker -- Ferdinand, one of the best 4 CBs of his era, can't say that about Walker
Campbell or Maguire -- Campbell by a mile
Gerrard or Rice -- clearly Gerrard
Scholes or Bellingham -- Bellingham is clearly talented, but he hasn't reached the peak Scholes level of ability yet, so it's clearly scholes
Beckham or Foden -- Beckham delivers
Barmby or Sterling -- Sterling
Kane or Heskey -- Kane
diff formations but that gives us Dier or Michael Owen....and it's obv Owen. But if that 5-1 team played 3 CBs I'd take Southgate over Dier.

In other words, I'd take 9 of the 5-1 team, and add Sterling and Kane. That's how much better the squad was back then and how limited it is today.

Saving ourselves for the big games…
I’ll watch tonight but really don’t hold much against the result or performance…
it’s the squad selection that worries me, Southgate said he’d only pick in form players but threw that out the window by picking maguire and a few others..

Germany thrashed Italy a couple of months ago so whilst they haven’t been great they were far too good for the team that beat us on Friday.

Just seen TAA not even in the matchday squad. What does this lad have to do? He has more assists that any other right back in the world over the last few years. Walker is up there as one of the best RB tbf, but TAA just doesn't seem to be favoured by GS.

TBF to Gareth (and I'm certainly not his biggest fan as a manager), but if he persists with 5 at the back (with wingbacks), then TAA will always find himself unlucky.

First of all TAA isn't a wingback, and secondly we have one of the best RWBs in the world.

TAA's stats are incredible for a RB though.

And saka at left wing back ???

Surely no one can defend this.

He wouldn't need to do that much defending as a RWB though.

I get the impression that the England environment hasn't quite recovered from the EURO Final yet. The performances since that game have been flat and the players lacking conviction or energy. Surely a game against Germany at Wembley will finally rouse them from their slumber.

He’s not defensively strong enough for Southgate it seems.

It would be nice. Germany certainly aren't the team they were a few years ago, but then neither are we. A good, convincing win is very much needed.

I don't think the result matters for his position, he'll be taking us in to the World Cup regardless and we're already relegated.

But it matters a hell of a lot for confidence, we're in an awful run and it's nowhere near good enough.
