England Germany tonight

Germany thrashed Italy a couple of months ago so whilst they haven’t been great they were far too good for the team that beat us on Friday.
They did Cardiff and got beat by Hungary. The form for these europa games is all over the place.

I definitely agree with this mind.

Saka plays RW for Arsenal, yet Southgate put's him LWB for England.

Southgate is not helping himself whatsoever.

Clearly shoehorning his favourites into a team.
That was a strange decision. Was he trying something out? I don't know

I'm a Southgate supporter, but it is a pressure game for sure. We've had a poor 6 months at international level. He has to resolve a few issues for this game.

Firstly we're looking brittle in defence, CB options are out of form backups have limited international experience, but he might have to go with them.

Second CM, we have poor options in this role, full stop. He has to find a solution and a balance, that allows us to start to dictate possession again, and be tight out of possession.

Up top, the wide players are not delivering, we have good options, but again none of them are experienced international player except for Sterling. At CF no one has put pressure on Kane for his role, we need that pressure. e need someone to come on as a sub and play an absolute blinder.

There has been a lot of guff said about this being a great england squad during the last 2 years, it isn't. It has clear gaps, and a lack of experience, there is individual ability, but that doesn't always translate to a good player or a good team at this level.

We're playing Germany lets just compare man for man against the team that beat Germany away 5-1.

Seaman or Pope --- Seaman by a country mile
Neville or James --- even, Neville more solid, James better going forward
Ashley Cole or Saka -- Ashley Cole by a mile, one of our best fullbacks ever
Ferdinand or Walker -- Ferdinand, one of the best 4 CBs of his era, can't say that about Walker
Campbell or Maguire -- Campbell by a mile
Gerrard or Rice -- clearly Gerrard
Scholes or Bellingham -- Bellingham is clearly talented, but he hasn't reached the peak Scholes level of ability yet, so it's clearly scholes
Beckham or Foden -- Beckham delivers
Barmby or Sterling -- Sterling
Kane or Heskey -- Kane
diff formations but that gives us Dier or Michael Owen....and it's obv Owen. But if that 5-1 team played 3 CBs I'd take Southgate over Dier.

In other words, I'd take 9 of the 5-1 team, and add Sterling and Kane. That's how much better the squad was back then and how limited it is today.

Makes you realise how incredibly well Southgate has done, especially compared to his predecessors.
But we should sack him because we've done badly in a non competition that no one in the world cares about. 🙄

He's tried it before too. We've even played James on the left. Shaw was great at the Euro's last years but he seems to have lost his way a bit and don't think Chilwell is anywhere near being fully fit.

It would be nice. Germany certainly aren't the team they were a few years ago, but then neither are we. A good, convincing win is very much needed.
Definitely. The one thing this current run of form shows though is the World Cup is NOT England's to lose. There are quite a few teams better than England (as usual).

Hopefully the team can go into November without nonsense tabloid claims of winning the thing.

We are not going to sack him. He has already said if he doesn’t do well in Qatar he will walk anyway.

Just seen TAA not even in the matchday squad. What does this lad have to do? He has more assists that any other right back in the world over the last few years. Walker is up there as one of the best RB tbf, but TAA just doesn't seem to be favoured by GS.
Defend better

Agree, we have that age old problem of having enough fit and high quality left sided players, which means we end up playing right sided ones out of position.....although to be fair, Saka is left footed and there is a strong argument that he is being played out of position at Arsenal, he's played more of his career at LM/LB than RM/RW

So if other Left backs are injured - who does he put there? He tried something out which didn't work but what else could he do?

Well his praises were sung for getting results in the last one so why shouldn't he receive criticism for this.

It feels like we have a manager who's days are numbered, you see this in club football. He's not picking the right players, he's not getting the best out of the players who do play and the formation doesn't seem to be working.

I'm sure we'll get through the group in the world cup but lose as soon as we meet anyone decent in the knockouts.

It just feels like the time for a change. Boring, uninspiring manager playing boring and uninspiring football.

Yep - we have certainly got players who are in form at the moment so it's the international managers fault for not picking the right players!

Southgate has just been quoted on Sky Sports and it seems like he's accepting that if he does badly at Qatar, he's on his way out.

I suppose the only question is what's classed as successful?
To many, only winning it will be enough now.
I personally think that semi-finals is a decent effort.
