Aye. At some point it won't obviously. There's always the risk of getting skittled out for a low score. But then we were more than capable of doing that trying to play more defensively anyway. The only difference is how long it will take if it happens. Suspect we'll see a lot fewer draws with this approach!
As I think someone said on the TMS coverage, we don't have a lot of top class more traditional test match batsman. But we have an abundance of world class white ball batsmen. So why not play to your strengths?

Yep, it's actually a fairly sound strategy. Play to your strengths whilst at the same time presenting something "new" for other teams to consider. I'm confident it could work long-term too, New Zealand have an excellent bowling attack and we've done them three times on the spin. India will be different (but maybe not more difficult?) test.

This is ridiculous, I’m used to England batting over 100 overs less than the opposition but it’s usually in abject failure

As sanga said why not play butler there?
Ok he might get out early but he can’t be any worse than the current opener plus we know on his day he can destroy sides and it would get another brilliant batsman into the batting line up.
What have we got to lose.
Keep buttler just for white ball in my opinion. He’s in the form of his life at the moment. No need to risk ruining that by sending him as an opener in my opinion
