I enjoyed the World End when we went in November. The wife thought the music was a bit heavy though.
 
Somers Town Coffee House not far from Kings X and Euston stations. It has a nice traditional feel. Does food also. Went to a meeting there years ago. The barmaid let us in to the corridor where the meeting room was through a secret bookcase door! I thought that was pretty cool. :)

on Chalton St - i bumped into Ian Wright in there one afternoon.

i would cross the Euston Rd at the british museum and go on to Mabeldon Place and Cartwright Gardens - walk along that road towards Bloomsbury/Great Ormond Street, there are good pubs along there and off the streets as you go.

Camden in the sunshine is great (busy but great) the market is worth a look and will keep you busy for a couple of hours.
 
It depends how much time you want to be walking or settling down to a good scoop.

Camden has lots of boozers but my old stamping ground after work was around Angel, the York with plenty of outside seating is just outside the tube station, just along Camden Passage is the Camden Head with a beer garden, 2 minutes walk away.

There's a few more boozers along Essex Road or on Upper Street, and eateries, which is great when you need your belly filling.

Wherever you end up enjoy it, you can have a great day down there.
 
Babel Beerhouse and Beer + Burger both just off Granary Square behind Kings X both excellent and really wide range of beers.

Spiritland is also around that area and is decent.

The Lighteman is ok but very spendy!!!

If you want a proper pub, go to the Somers Town Coffee House in between Kings X and Euston Station. Very good!!
 
The burgers and sides in Beer + Burger are amazing too. I was in there Tuesday evening as I work around there. Met a mate from Boro who was down and took him there.

He's still talking about the Burger!!!
 
Coal drops (where the lighterman is) has a few other bars and food places. Dont see attraction with lighterman - even if you do get a good spot outside and weathers good there no real appeal to it. Borough market way too busy and everyone seems to be on a working lunch. So absolutely no help but have a nice time and be safe
 
Just to add Kings Cross isn't at all like it used to be and there are absolutely 5hit loads of nice bars on (or just off) York Way now. I had a few in the Gas Station recently which is very close to Kings X and has a really nice (albeit modern) beer garden which will be great now the weather has ramped up. Don't expect to pay less than £7 a pint though, anywhere half decent.

EDIT: Actually I've just looked at their website and a pint of Hells is £5.80, pretty decent value in this day and age in that location.
 
Behind Kings Cross Station there is a new development called Coal Drop Yard and in there is a craft beer bar and worth a visit for some unusual local brews. In fact it is worth a trip there anyway and you will see Samsung’s massive concept store. Across the way for some lunch at Dishoom. (Or breakfast before 11).

If it’s a really good old fashioned boozer then you can do no better then The King Charles I on Northdown Street.

Only if you're willing to queue, but there's plenty of other places that dont require you to stand in line with all the tourists for an hour. Given how hot it is, there will be plenty of families out there, grabbing drinks from the food / drink trucks and letting their kids loose in the fountains (including us on Sunday).

As others have said there's loads of bright new pubs / bars / places to eat round Coals Drop Yard, as well as some great shops and it's VERY different from what Kings Cross used to be. There's also The Standard hotel directly opposite Kings Cross which has both a beer garden and a roof terrace.

If however you still fancy traditional pubs then there's still a few as you head into Bloomsbury such as MgGlynns (with pub cat) and The Boot.

5 minute walk
Great beer and food - just won an award for best pub around Kings Cross I think
