Does Engel actually offer anything?

I don’t want to see players like Engel and Barlaser in our starting 11 - they slow down what is already quite a ponderous build. They simply aren’t good enough for what we’re aspiring too, and if people can’t see that then they clearly don’t understand the game very well
Someone who knows the game better than you ever will picks them both every week.

Well it’s not working very well is it - managers often have their favourites and Engel seems to be one of Carricks for some reason. I like Carrick but he needs to recognise when something isn’t working

I don't even think he is. He's hooked him at half time a couple of times. He's favoured Bangura when he's been fit most of the time. I just think it would have been a big statement for him to drop him for Thomas and he never made it for whatever reason. He'll play Thomas against Preston.

Well let’s hope so because Thomas is light years ahead of Engel

Carrick made mistakes today. I trust he'll put it right next week. If he continues to make mistakes ill start to lose faith.

He's got a sub-standard squad but his team selection is starting to cost us.
Frankly I’m already here, the guy doesn’t learn from his mistakes full stop.

Last season the powderpuff midfield against the likes of Burnley, West Brom & Stoke, the Coventry 3 games in a row fiasco.

This season, too many to mention, playing Rogers, silvera and greenwood in front of jones and coburb early doors, crooks as the #10 despite there being much better options available, recently playing players out of their natural positions, barlaser and Engel playing with better options sat on the bench.

Things don’t work and you learn from them and try new things, MC doesn’t want to do this. All this talk about big teams bring in for him, any who watched us today will run a mile

I don't think I've ever actually seen a worse passer at this level of the game. His pass completion must be somewhere in the low 20s. Also Barlaser, what does he offer defensively? He's completely passive and simple cut outs just go by him. Maybe he can play in a more advanced position but he's never a CM. Engel unfortunately just hasn't got anything to offer in any position.
Unfortunately I agree. If we want to go up these 2 aren't good enough. They both have ability, but too many deficiencies. Squad players yes, starters no.

We're supposed to be a passing team who play out from the back. He's absolutely awful at that. Even Fry finds his man more than Engel
I’m glad someone else sees it with Engel - i was beginning to feel like the kid in the emperors new clothes story

Worst left back I’ve seen here in many a long year. Can’t defend, constantly out of position and constantly gives the ball away cheaply - he should not be starting week in week out for us. I’m just amazed he seems to get a feee pass on here by most every week
Doesn’t have a turn of pace, looks knackered

I wish other players would pass the ball to him when he makes runs as I mean he makes so many runs into space but players see the run turn around and usually pass to glover instead of taking a risk and play a ball to him. I do feel for Engel as he does get forward alot and isn't played in.

The problem Engel has is that the majority of the game is played on the right and when he gets the ball from a slow move from VDB nobody is further up left for him to find he holds onto the ball waiting for someone it doesn't happen so he has to go back to maintain possession

He can’t defend, that’s his main problem - quite a large problem to have when you’re a left back

This is a great point and is a team issue. We spend large amount of time with so much of the team moved over to the right. Common to see Forss, Greenwood, Hackney, Barlaser, Ayling all supporting interplay down that side. Down the left it’s mostly Engel without a team mate anywhere near his postcode. The he gets picked out for passing back to VDB when that’s the only option anyone makes.

See goal 1 today pal 👍🏻
What do you suggest he should have done differently? The attacker wasn’t even his man, he bust a gut to make it difficult to take the shot on, then the keeper comes out and takes him out of the game, the attacker spins and puts the ball in the net, by which point VDB (whose man it was) has only just got anywhere near him. No other boro player he even got back into the box to defend by that point. Yet you want to blame the one player who actually made an effort?
