Does Engel actually offer anything?

He would offer something if someone gave him the bluddy ball today!
We were so right-sided it was like a school kid's game at times.
He was stood on the left, in acres of space, raising his arm, hoping to receive the ball and the rest just *****d around:mad:

It was the same against Sunderland, it appears to be the way we play, overload the right with the intention of quickly switching it to the left but it just never happens because none of our players can sweep a ball on without taking at least two touches.

What do you suggest he should have done differently? The attacker wasn’t even his man, he bust a gut to make it difficult to take the shot on, then the keeper comes out and takes him out of the game, the attacker spins and puts the ball in the net, by which point VDB (whose man it was) has only just got anywhere near him. No other boro player he even got back into the box to defend by that point. Yet you want to blame the one player who actually made an effort?
I expect him to get goal side and put himself between man goal. Very basic stuff.

👍🏻

Positionally Engal is atrocious and regularly gets beat in a 1v1 against bang average wingers

In possession it’s either back to VDB irrespective of how far up he is or a loose ball forward surrendering possession

His decision making is awful

Ultimately Engal has cost us goals and points this season, anyone who says he is good at going forward is admitting to a player who is contributing as a net loss in terms of outlay and performance

Each make mistakes but our style of play is so volatile, we need to give these players the season to bed in and get all our players back from injury.

I’m not one to dive straight in and call everyone rubbish.

We need to be patient.
Where has this come from where we "need to give players a season to bed in"? You buy players to play and play well not just to take 12 months to bed in and then sell to a league one side.

Perfectly summed up - he just isn’t good enough, end of story

Exactly. I get it with 19 year olds who cost bobbins. But we paid a couple of mil for Engel and he's 24. He should be ready to go.

Barlaser been here 13 months and played over 30 games. Aplogisers - "Give him a chance, he's coming good". Nah mate, he's just crap and will never be good enough whether he plays 30 games or 300

Carrick made mistakes today. I trust he'll put it right next week. If he continues to make mistakes ill start to lose faith.

He's got a sub-standard squad but his team selection is starting to cost us.
Carrick doesn't seem to learn from his though. Chelsea away, Rotherham away and home, Sunderland at home and today...if it's not the wrong starting lineup then it's the bad in game management or the atrocious use of subs. Today being a case in point...by half time it wasn't working...yet he left it until 68th minutes to change it. I like the fella...but I just wish someone would put a rocket up him to kick him into action.

He's a league one player like most of our team

100% agree. I've mentioned this in numerous threads. It seemed the penny dropped today half an hour in. I really want it to work for Carrick, don't want to to weigh on him too hard yet

credit for a stirring 2nd half but for Greenwoods miss(s) and non offside goal what a different story it would have been but we keep saying this

While the second half was less bad let's not kid ourselves they were game managing and a fluke off Silvera's backside doesn't change that
I would be interested to see Greenwood's offside 'goal' again, but nobody seemed to complain - and TV didn't bother to show it

His passing and crossing is excellent.

It's his defending that's the problem and he had a shocker on that front today.
Definitely has some good attributes but his positioning and defensive presence is average, which is not to say it won’t get better or worse.

My main worry with him is with his endurance confidence and his ability to track back. Ok he can do a decent job at times but he’s a tough watch, which is why Thomas had been ushered in to help him out. Personally I think he’ll need to do a few half marathons to improve his endurance in the off season and get with a top notch coach who can really improve his defensive attributes.

Confidence is everything in a footballer, but in Engel I’ve noticed he definitely loses confidence quickly if he makes some mistakes and finds it difficult to refocus maybe. 🤔

Anyone think when Thomas came on the air of confidence seem to rise and we were able to push the ball forward quicker with Thomas on the pitch?
